The Keeper's Invitation

Victoria Ashcroft had vanished.
Not escaped.
Vanished.
The surveillance team replayed every second of footage from the estate.
Four cameras covered the front entrance.
Three monitored the gardens.
Two overlooked the private beach.
Inside, twelve additional cameras watched every hallway.
There was only one impossible fact.
Victoria never appeared leaving.
Rebecca Morris watched the footage for the fifth time.
"There has to be a blind spot."
The technician shook his head.
"There isn't."
Daniel folded his arms.
"Then someone manipulated the recordings."
"We checked."
"No edits."
"No missing frames."
Emily stared silently at the screen.
She wasn't watching Victoria.
She was watching the grandfather clock in the hallway.
"Pause."
Rebecca looked at her.
"What?"
"The clock."
The technician froze the frame.
Emily stepped closer.
"What time does it show?"
"8:17."
She skipped ahead thirty seconds.
The clock still read...
8:17.
Another minute.
Still 8:17.
Rebecca's eyes widened.
"The clock stopped."
Emily nodded.
"No."
"It was stopped."
---
The FBI immediately dispatched a team back to Victoria's mansion.
This time they ignored the luxurious furniture, priceless paintings, and expensive antiques.
Emily walked directly to the grandfather clock.
"It isn't running."
Rebecca examined the mechanism.
"It hasn't been wound in years."
Daniel frowned.
"Then why was it even here?"
Emily placed both hands on the carved wooden frame.
Nathan Archer designed escape routes.
Nothing inside this house was decoration.
She gently pushed the clock.
It didn't move.
She examined the brass pendulum.
There was an engraving.
VIII • XII
Eight.
Twelve.
Emily looked at Daniel.
"The Circle."
Daniel grasped the pendulum and slowly turned it clockwise.
Click.
A deep metallic sound echoed beneath the floor.
The clock slid sideways.
Behind it...
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
---
The underground corridor stretched beneath the estate for nearly two hundred feet.
Emergency lights glowed faintly along the walls.
Someone had maintained this place.
Recently.
The air smelled clean.
Fresh.
Rebecca whispered into her radio.
"We've located a hidden passage."
No response.
She tried again.
Static.
Daniel looked upward.
"Signal jammer."
Emily's heartbeat accelerated.
"They knew someone would find this."
They continued downward.
The tunnel ended at a circular steel door.
Already open.
Beyond it...
A private chamber.
Bookshelves lined the walls.
Maps covered a massive table.
A fireplace still burned.
Someone had been there only minutes earlier.
Rebecca noticed a crystal glass.
The ice inside hadn't completely melted.
Emily slowly turned in a circle.
"She's gone."
Daniel walked toward the table.
"No."
He picked up a single envelope.
"She wanted us here."
Across the front, elegant handwriting read:
For Emily Carter
Emily hesitated before opening it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Only one page.
---
Emily,
If this letter has reached you, then Nathan is dead.
He always believed truth could defeat power.
He was wrong.
Power simply learns the truth first.
You think you are hunting the Circle.
You are not.
The Circle has been studying you since the night you walked out of Ryan Carter's mansion.
Every choice you've made...
Every person you've trusted...
Every place you've hidden...
Someone reported it.
You already know the informer.
You simply haven't realized who it is.
If you truly want to end this...
Come alone.
Tomorrow.
9:00 p.m.
Union Station.
Platform 12.
Do not tell Agent Morris.
Do not tell Daniel.
If either of them arrives...
Someone innocent dies.
— Victoria Ashcroft
---
Silence filled the chamber.
Rebecca slowly lowered the letter.
"So she knows about us."
Daniel stared at the signature.
"This could be a trap."
Emily folded the page carefully.
"It is a trap."
Rebecca looked at her.
"Then we don't go."
Emily didn't answer.
Instead, she walked toward the fireplace.
Above the mantle hung an old black-and-white photograph.
Twelve people stood together outside a country estate.
Eleven faces had been neatly labeled.
The twelfth had been scratched away.
Only the outline remained.
Daniel narrowed his eyes.
"Who removed it?"
Emily looked closer.
Tiny grooves surrounded the missing face.
Someone had carefully carved it out with a knife.
Not recently.
Years ago.
Rebecca suddenly froze.
"Wait."
She pointed toward the bottom corner of the photograph.
There was a handwritten date.
May 18, 2002.
Daniel's expression changed.
"That's impossible."
Emily turned.
"What?"
Daniel's voice had become almost inaudible.
"My father died in 2001."
He pointed toward one of the eleven labeled faces.
"There he is."
The room fell silent.
Rebecca slowly looked from the photograph to Daniel.
"If this date is real..."
"...then someone attended a meeting..."
"...one year after your father was officially buried."
Emily felt her blood run cold.
Either the photograph had been falsified...
Or Daniel Carter's father had never died when the world believed he had.

And if that was true...
Then the Carter family's darkest secret had only just begun.
