The Twelfth Seat

The fire consumed Nathan Archer's house long before firefighters reached the cliff.
Emily stood beside the highway, clutching the scorched metal case against her chest while flames swallowed decades of secrets. Smoke drifted over the Pacific, turning the sunrise into a hazy orange glow.
Daniel gently touched her shoulder.
"We have to leave."
She didn't move.
"Nathan stayed behind."
"He made his choice."
"He could have escaped."
Daniel looked back at the burning house.
"I don't think he believed there was anywhere left to run."
The distant sound of helicopters grew louder.
Within minutes, police cars sealed off the road. Agent Rebecca Morris arrived in an unmarked SUV and hurried toward them.
"Are either of you hurt?"
Emily shook her head.
"No."
Rebecca's eyes fell to the metal case.
"Is that what Nathan gave you?"
Emily nodded.
"He said it contains the names of the twelve."
Rebecca inhaled sharply.
"We need to get that somewhere secure."
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
"Secure? After someone stole evidence from a federal building?"
Rebecca didn't argue.
Instead, she quietly admitted, "You're right."
---
Three hours later, they gathered inside a secure conference room at a small federal field office known only to a handful of senior agents.
The metal case sat in the middle of the table.
It had no keyhole.
No combination dial.
Only a circular fingerprint scanner.
Rebecca frowned.
"Biometric lock."
Daniel examined the edges.
"No damage from the fire."
Emily remembered Nathan's final words.
"They'll come back."
"He knew this box mattered more than his life."
Rebecca called in a forensic technician.
After several failed attempts, the technician looked up.
"It isn't programmed for Nathan Archer."
Daniel frowned.
"What?"
"The scanner belongs to someone else."
Emily felt a knot tighten in her stomach.
"If not Nathan..."
"Then whoever owns the box is still alive."
---
Late that evening, another breakthrough arrived.
The FBI identified the SUV seen fleeing the burning house.
It had been stolen two days earlier.
Abandoned less than an hour after the explosion.
No fingerprints.
No DNA.
Professional.
Rebecca spread several surveillance photos across the table.
One image made Daniel stop.
"I know him."
Emily leaned closer.
The man wore sunglasses and a navy suit.
"You've seen him before?"
Daniel nodded slowly.
"He attended my father's funeral."
"I thought only family was there."
"He wasn't family."
"He never introduced himself."
Rebecca typed quickly into the federal database.
"No criminal record."
"No corporate history."
"No driver's license."
Emily looked confused.
"How does someone not exist?"
Rebecca closed the laptop.
"Because someone erased him."
---
That night, Emily couldn't sleep.
She walked onto the balcony outside the safe house.
Los Angeles stretched endlessly below, its lights shimmering beneath the darkness.
Daniel joined her carrying two cups of coffee.
"You've been awake every hour."
"So have you."
He handed her a cup.
For several minutes they stood silently.
Finally Emily asked,
"When this started... did you ever imagine it would become this?"
Daniel smiled faintly.
"I thought exposing Ryan would end everything."
"And now?"
"I think Ryan was only the beginning."
Emily stared at the city.
"So what do we do?"
Daniel answered without hesitation.
"We find whoever owns that fingerprint."
---
The next morning, Rebecca entered the room carrying another folder.
"I think we've got something."
She placed an enlarged photograph on the table.
It showed Nathan Archer shaking hands with a woman outside a courthouse nearly fifteen years earlier.
Emily studied the woman's face.
Elegant.
Confident.
Dark hair.
Around sixty years old.
No name appeared beneath the photograph.
Only a handwritten note recovered from Nathan's studio.
Seat Twelve
Daniel's expression changed.
"She isn't just a member."
Rebecca nodded.
"We believe she's the current chair of the Westbridge Circle."
Emily looked up.
"Do we know who she is?"
Rebecca slowly turned over the photograph.
A single name was written on the back.
Victoria Ashcroft.
Daniel's face lost all color.
Emily immediately noticed.
"You know her."
He swallowed.
"I wish I didn't."
Rebecca looked between them.
"Who is she?"
Daniel took a long breath before answering.
"She was my father's closest friend."
Emily frowned.
"You've met her?"
Daniel nodded once.
"When I was twelve..."
"...she told me that the most dangerous people are never the ones standing in front of you."
He looked at the photograph again.
"I think she was warning me."
Rebecca folded her arms.
"Or threatening you."
The room fell silent.
Emily stared at Victoria Ashcroft's face.
For years she had believed Ryan Carter was the most powerful person she would ever fear.
Now she understood something far worse.
Ryan had spent his entire life trying to impress a woman who had never once needed to raise her voice.

And somewhere in Los Angeles...
Victoria Ashcroft had just learned that Nathan Archer's final gift had survived the fire.
