Chapter 3 - The Sky Explodes

Back on the resort dock, Julian Vance raised his crystal glass to his lips, taking a slow sip of scotch as he watched the distant jet skis bobbing in the darkening swells of the bay.

He checked his luxury watch. It had been twenty minutes since Victoria took me out on the water. The sedative he had mixed into the vitamins should have completely subdued my nervous system by now, and the violent, bone-jarring ride was designed to ensure I suffered a severe "accidental" miscarriage, clearing the path for his corporate merger with Victoria’s family empire.

"She’s resilient, I’ll give her that," Julian murmured to himself, lowering the binoculars. "Shouldn't be much longer now."

Suddenly, a strange, low-frequency vibration hummed through the wooden planks of the dock.

Julian frowned, setting his glass down on a nearby cocktail table. He looked up at the darkening evening sky over the horizon of the Pacific.

At first, it sounded like distant thunder rolling in from a tropical storm. But thunder didn't rattle the glass windows of the resort suites, and thunder didn't cast a sudden, synchronized wash of searchlight beams across the surface of the ocean.

The low hum rapidly escalated into an earth-shattering roar.

From behind the jagged cliffs flanking the private cove, the sky literally exploded with tactical aviation power. Three matte-black Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters bearing military insignia sliced through the cloud cover, their massive rotor blades whipping up a hurricane-force gale that sent patio chairs, cocktail glasses, and terrified tourists scattering across the resort grounds in sheer panic.

Victoria, idling her jet ski a quarter-mile offshore, froze instantly. Her triumphant smile vanished, replaced by a mask of absolute, paralyzing terror as a massive naval spotlight lanced down from the lead helicopter, illuminating her jet ski in a blinding circle of white light.

"What... what is that?" Victoria screamed into the wind, looking frantically toward the shore.

On the dock, Julian went completely rigid. His face drained of color as he watched two heavily armed United States Coast Guard fast-intercept vessels roar around the headland, their deck-mounted .50 caliber machine guns locked squarely on the private pavilion.

Before the resort security guards could even reach their holsters, the doors of the hovering Black Hawks slid open. Elite tactical operators clad in full combat gear fast-roped directly onto the wooden docks and onto the watercraft below with terrifying, mechanical precision.

"Federal operation! Stay down! Do not move!" a booming voice echoed through a tactical loudspeaker, vibrating across the entire coastline.

Julian stumbled backward, tripping over a lounge chair as a pair of armed operatives landed directly in front of him, pinning his arms behind his back with plastic zip-ties before he could even process what was happening.

"Get your hands off me! Do you know who I am?!" Julian roared, his corporate arrogance flaring even as a tactical boot shoved him face-first onto the wooden planks. "I am Julian Vance! CEO of Vance Technologies! This is international waters, you have no right—"

The heavy crunch of polished combat boots interrupted his screeching.

A tall, impeccably dressed older man stepped out from the cabin of the intercept vessel that had just docked at the pier. He wore the crisp white dress uniform of a four-star Admiral in the United States Navy. Four heavy gold stripes and four gleaming silver stars adorned his shoulders.

Admiral Hector Sterling’s face was carved from granite, his eyes burning with a cold, terrifying fury that made the local resort managers wet themselves in fear.

He didn't look at Julian. He walked straight to the edge of the dock where a medical team was already hoisting my unconscious, freezing, blood-soaked body out of the water from the towed jet ski.

"Get my daughter to the airborne medical unit immediately," Admiral Sterling commanded, his voice carrying the absolute, unquestionable weight of the entire United States military. "If she or my grandchildren draw one unassisted breath, I want every asset in this hemisphere frozen, seized, and dismantled before midnight."
