Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The sterile white lights of the military trauma unit in San Diego hummed softly.
When I woke up twelve hours later, the first thing I felt was the rhythmic rise and fall of my chest, and the faint, beautiful sound of twin infant cries echoing from the nursery annex down the hall.
My mother sat in a chair beside my bed, her eyes red from crying, holding my hand with a fierce, protective grip. Standing near the window, staring out at the Pacific horizon with his hands clasped behind his back, was my father.
"They're safe," my father said quietly, his voice rough with emotion as he turned to look at me. "A boy and a girl. Both strong. Both fighters. Just like their mother."
Tears spilled over my lashes, washing away the lingering nightmare of the ocean. "Thank God."
"Thank you for keeping your tactical watch active, Genevieve," my father added, a grim, terrifying smile touching the corners of his mouth. "Because what happened next wasn't just a rescue. It was an extraction."
For the next forty-eight hours, while I recovered under the care of military specialists, the federal government—backed entirely by my family's unstoppable legal and financial artillery—went to work on Julian Vance.
The illusion of his self-made empire evaporated like morning fog.
Daniel, our family attorney, walked into my hospital room on the third day carrying a stack of legal files thick enough to stop a bullet.
"It’s over, Genevieve," Daniel announced, laying the documents across my bed. "The federal indictment was signed this morning. Attempted murder, conspiracy, fraudulent acquisition of military-linked patents, corporate embezzlement, and tampering with federal grants. Julian is facing twenty-five years to life without the possibility of parole."
"What about Victoria?" I asked, adjusting my pillows.
"She tried to claim it was an accident, a 'prank gone wrong' during a vacation excursion," Daniel scoffed. "Unfortunately for her, the tactical dash-cam footage from the Coast Guard intercept vessel captured her explicit threats across the water, and our forensic audit of her personal devices proved she and Julian planned the entire incident three weeks in advance to collect your trust allocation."
As for Vance Technologies, the house of cards collapsed instantly.

The moment federal investigators seized the corporate headquarters and revealed that their golden-boy CEO had attempted to murder a four-star admiral's daughter, every major venture capital firm pulled their funding within six hours. The board of directors held an emergency vote at 3:00 a.m., stripping Julian of all executive powers, freezing his personal assets, and voting to liquidate the company to pay off mounting legal liabilities and restitution fines.
The man who had stood on the Cabo dock holding a glass of scotch, believing he was untouchable, was now sitting in a maximum-security federal holding cell wearing an orange jumpsuit, waiting for a court-appointed public defender he couldn't even afford to bribe.
