Chapter 1 - The Click in the Dark

The sharp, metallic click of the door lock echoing from the hallway felt like a death sentence.

My breath caught in my throat. I stood frozen in the dim, lavender-scented light of the nursery, holding two-month-old Leo tightly against my chest. Just seconds earlier, a miraculous weight had lifted off my shoulders as the tiny, starving infant finally swallowed—not once, but several times—ending weeks of a terrifying hunger strike that had pushed the most feared mafia boss in the city to the edge of absolute madness.

And then, Lorenzo Rossi had caught me.

The cold barrel of his Beretta had been leveled straight between my eyes, his gray gaze burning with a lethal fury that could freeze blood. But the instant Leo swallowed, the horrifying tension in the room had shifted. Lorenzo had heard it. The life monitor by the crib had blipped in rhythm with the baby’s sudden, desperate nourishment. He had lowered his weapon by a fraction of an inch, his hand trembling slightly—not from weakness, but from the agonizing, bone-deep desperation of a father watching his only child slip away.

I had been right on the verge of telling him the unthinkable: that the expensive imported formulas, the elite medical treatments, and the sterile donor milks hadn't failed because Leo was sick. They had failed because someone inside this mansion was slowly, methodically poisoning or altering his food.

Before I could say the words, someone outside the heavy oak door had acted.

The lock turned. The bolt slid home. We were trapped.

"Mr. Rossi?" I whispered, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs as I looked down at the infant in my arms. Leo had suddenly stopped nursing, startled by the muffled sound outside, his tiny hand clenching into a fist against my bare skin.

Lorenzo didn't answer immediately. His powerful frame stiffened instantly, the dangerous aura of the syndicate boss washing back over him tenfold. He wasn't just a grieving father anymore; he was a predator who realized a trap had just been sprung on his own territory.

Suddenly, a soft, distorted whisper drifted through the thick wood of the nursery door, floating straight into the quiet room.

“...get rid of the maid before the boss digs too deep...”

My blood turned to ice. It was a woman’s voice—smooth, low, and laced with absolute venom.

Lorenzo’s head snapped toward the door, his eyes turning to molten steel. In one fluid, terrifying movement, he raised his pistol again, bypassed me entirely, and fired two deafening bullets straight through the brass doorknob.

The explosions shook the walls of the nursery. Smoke curled from the shattered metal, and with a swift kick of his heavy Italian leather shoe, Lorenzo smashed the door wide open.

The hallway outside was completely empty.

Only a faint, lingering trace of expensive French perfume hung heavy in the midnight air—the exact same scent worn by Elena, Lorenzo’s cold, immaculate sister-in-law, who managed the household staff with an iron fist.

Lorenzo slowly lowered his smoking gun, his jaw clenching so hard muscles strained violently in his neck. He turned back toward me, his gaze blazing with a dark, terrifying intensity.

"You stay right here," Lorenzo commanded, his voice dropping into a register that brook no argument. "If anyone tries to open this door, you shoot them." He unclipped a heavy, specialized SIG Sauer pistol from his tactical belt, dropped it onto the rocking chair beside me, and stormed out into the corridor before I could utter a single word.

I stood alone in the nursery, the faint crying of the baby resuming as the adrenaline faded, realizing with terrifying clarity that I had just stepped onto a battlefield where survival wasn't guaranteed for anyone.
