Chapter 1 - The Echo of the Printout

The whir of the laser printer died down, leaving a deafening silence in the corridor of the maternity ward. The heat radiating from my skin was feverish, a mix of adrenaline, physical exhaustion, and the bitter, suffocating smoke of betrayal. My belly, stretched to its absolute limit with four growing lives, throbbed with a sharp, rhythmic pain that warned me my body was reaching its breaking point.
Security Officer Vance looked down at the warm sheet of paper resting in his palm. His face, weathered by years of hospital corridors and midnight emergencies, hardened into an expression of absolute disgust. He didn’t look at my husband, Julian, or my mother-in-law, Beatrice. His eyes remained locked on the digital metadata printed at the bottom of the admission cancellation log.
"Terminal 4," Vance read aloud, his voice cutting through the tense atmosphere like a scalpel. "The administrative kiosk located directly outside the VIP Plastic Surgery Recovery Suite on the third floor. Logged in at exactly 10:42 AM. Using Dr. Harrison’s administrative override code."
Julian’s face drained of every drop of color. "That’s... that’s a system error. The hospital’s IT infrastructure has been glitching all week. Anyone could have spoofed a terminal ID."
"Really?" The consultant, Dr. Sterling, stepped forward, her clipboard clutched tightly against her white coat. She turned to face Julian, her eyes narrowing with professional contempt. "Dr. Harrison is currently in surgery on the fifth floor and has been since eight o'clock this morning. Furthermore, her override code requires a two-factor biometric thumbprint scan registered only to her personnel badge. Unless someone severed her thumb, Mr. Miller, that terminal was accessed by someone with authorized administrative credentials."
Beatrice stepped in, her manicured fingers clawing at the sleeve of Julian’s jacket. "He’s confused! The stress of the quadruplets has made him erratic. We were just trying to help Sarah transition to a quiet recovery wing downstairs where it’s cheaper and less chaotic!"
"Quieter?" I choked out, gripping the armrests of the wheelchair so hard my knuckles turned white. Another contraction hit, rolling across my lower abdomen with the force of a tidal wave. I gasped, doubling over slightly as the nurse immediately hovered closer, pressing a reassuring hand against my trembling shoulder. "You wanted the VIP suite for your son’s mistress, Chloe! You tried to throw me and my unborn children out onto the street so she could recover from a nose job and a tummy tuck in peace!"
The word hung in the air, heavy and undeniable.
The receptionist gasped, covering her mouth with her hand. Several nurses wheeling supply carts down the hall stopped dead in their tracks. Julian flinched as if he had been physically struck, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water.
"Sarah, please," Julian hissed, stepping forward with a frantic, pleading look in his eyes. He tried to lower his voice, leaning in close so the security officer wouldn't catch every syllable. "You’re making a scene. Think of the babies. If you calm down right now, I’ll buy you whatever you want. We can go to the penthouse suite tomorrow. Just drop this."

"Drop it?" I laughed, a harsh, cracked sound devoid of any humor. The IV site on my arm had torn open again, staining my makeshift bandage with a dark circle of fresh blood. "You dragged me out of my room by my arm. You let your mother lie to the staff, claiming I was mentally unstable. You traded my medical care for a cosmetic recovery room for your side piece. There is no dropping this, Julian. This is where your life ends."
Dr. Sterling didn't wait for Julian to reply. She turned to the nurse wheeling my chair. "Get her to Delivery Suite A immediately. Prep for an emergency fetal monitor and page anesthesiology. If those contractions don't subside, we are delivering these babies tonight."
