Chapter 5 - Sunshine and Salvation

Three months later, the spring sun washed over the wide wooden deck of our new home—a stunning, sprawling coastal house perched safely overlooking the glittering blue Pacific. There were no hidden clauses, no secret bank accounts, and no shadow of betrayal lingering in the halls.
Everything—from the deed to the property to the accounts securing our future—was held entirely in my name and protected by an unshakeable family trust.
Inside the nursery, four cribs stood arranged in a neat semicircle, filled with soft pastel blankets and the sweet, comforting scent of baby powder. My quadruplets—Leo, Maya Jr., Ethan, and Chloe—were sleeping peacefully, their tiny chests rising and falling in perfect, harmonious rhythm. I had legally changed the name of the fourth baby the moment the birth certificates were reissued, wiping every trace of my ex-husband's toxic lineage from our lives forever.
I walked over to the bay window, holding a steaming cup of herbal tea, watching the waves roll lazily onto the golden sand below.
The criminal trial had concluded swiftly the week before. Julian and Beatrice had accepted a plea deal resulting in a decade behind bars in federal prison, while their co-conspirators at the real estate firm and the plastic surgery clinic faced massive RICO indictments. Chloe, the mistress, had fled the state before she could be subpoenaed, leaving behind her fake designer bags and a mountain of unpaid debts.
My phone buzzed on the kitchen island. It was a text message from Dr. Sterling, checking in on the babies' three-month developmental milestones. I smiled, typing back a quick, reassuring reply about how well they were all eating and growing.
Just then, soft footsteps approached from behind me. A pair of warm, gentle arms wrapped securely around my waist, resting comfortably above my healed abdomen. Maya leaned her head against my shoulder, looking out at the magnificent ocean view with a contented sigh.
"The lawyers just finalized the last of the corporate liquidation paperwork," Maya whispered softly. "Every single asset Julian tried to steal has been successfully recovered and transferred into the children's trust. You did it, Sarah. You won."
I placed my hands over hers, feeling the steady, reassuring warmth of family, safety, and absolute freedom. The nightmare in the hospital corridor felt like a lifetime ago—a distant, smoking ruin of a past I had completely burned to the ground.

I took a deep breath of the crisp, salt-scented air, smiling as a faint giggle drifted from the nursery.
"We didn't just win, Maya," I whispered, gazing out at the endless horizon where the bright blue sky met the sparkling sea. "We finally claimed our kingdom."
