Chapter 2 - The Summoning

The morning sun had barely begun to filter through our thin apartment blinds when my phone violently vibrated against the nightstand. It was 8:45 AM. Restaurants like The Gilded Truffle rarely operated during daylight hours before noon, and managers like Julian never called their staff on a Saturday morning unless an absolute catastrophe had occurred.

"Maya," Julian’s voice barked through the speaker, devoid of its usual arrogant swagger and replaced by a strange, breathless urgency. "I need you at the restaurant immediately. Do not ask questions. Just get down here."

"Julian, it’s my day off," I groaned, rubbing the heavy sleep from my eyes. "And honestly, after what you pulled on Friday night—"

"Listen to me very carefully," Julian interrupted, his voice dropping to a tense, shaky whisper. "The night crew was doing a deep-cleaning sweep behind the booths in the main dining room an hour ago. One of the busboys found something wedged deep underneath the velvet upholstery of table twelve—far back against the wall where nobody could see it unless they were tearing the booth apart."

My heart gave a sudden, hard thud against my ribs. "What are you talking about? What did they find?"

"It’s not money, Maya," Julian said, sounding genuinely rattled. "It’s... something else. Something terrifying. The moment you walk through those front doors, you need to see this. Get down here right now."

Before I could demand any more answers, the line went dead.

Twenty minutes later, I burst through the heavy brass-and-glass front doors of The Gilded Truffle. The restaurant was dark, cavernous, and smelled faintly of industrial floor wax and yesterday's seafood scraps. The chairs were still stacked upside down on the tables from the previous night's closing shift.

Standing near the host stand was Julian. But the man who stood before me looked nothing like the untouchable, razor-sharp manager who had extorted me two nights ago. His hair was disheveled, his silk tie was loosened around a bare neck, and his face was completely drained of color. He looked like a man who had just stared straight into the abyss.

Without a single word of greeting, Julian reached behind the podium and retrieved a heavy, oversized black leather binder with reinforced metal corners. It looked less like a personal diary and more like an institutional ledger or a corporate dossier.

He held it out toward me with trembling hands, his fingers visibly shaking as the heavy object hovered in the air between us.

"I think you need to see this," Julian whispered, his voice cracking slightly. "I opened the first page five minutes before I called you. And honestly, Maya... I think we are sitting on top of a massive criminal conspiracy."
