Chapter 4 - The Master Plan

I pulled out a thick manila envelope that had been wedged into the back pocket of the leather binder. Inside weren't just more receipts—there were printed reservation confirmations, flight itineraries, upcoming gala tickets, and a comprehensive corporate organizational chart for Vance Global Enterprises, a high-profile luxury real estate investment firm based on the upper east side.

Richard Vance wasn't just some random con artist looking for a free steak dinner. He was the senior vice president of a multi-million-dollar corporation. He lived in a penthouse suite overlooking the river, drove a brand-new Aston Martin, and regularly rubbed shoulders with city politicians, high-society elites, and our restaurant's primary investors.

To people like Richard Vance, a $400 dinner bill was loose change found between sofa cushions. But to him, the thrill wasn't even about saving the money—it was about the intoxicating rush of power. It was about manipulating the system, exploiting working-class kids trying to pay their tuition, and watching corporate managers like Julian enforce their dirty work for them.

"Maya, what are you thinking?" Julian asked, staring at me with a mixture of fear and newfound respect as he watched the wheels turning in my head. "You have that look in your eye. The kind of look that usually gets people sued or arrested."

"Not arrested, Julian. Exposed," I said, closing the heavy leather binder with a sharp, echoing snap that resonated through the empty dining room. "Think about it. A man in his position—surrounded by wealthy investors, board members, and high-society galas—how much is his pristine corporate reputation worth? Especially when he's about to close a massive real estate merger next week?"

Julian’s eyes widened as the strategic chess pieces fell into place in his mind. "The annual Metropolitan Charity Gala is this coming Thursday night. It’s being hosted right here in our grand ballroom. All of our major investors, local media outlets, and city council members will be attending. And guess who is the guest of honor slated to give the keynote speech?"

"Richard Vance," I smiled, a cold, sharp expression that left zero room for argument. "He’s scheduled to take the podium right beneath our sparkling crystal chandeliers, talking about corporate integrity, leadership, and luxury ethics."

"If we walk up to him with this binder during the middle of the cocktail hour..." Julian began, a slow, nervous grin spreading across his face. "If we present every single receipt, every cruel margin note, and every proof of systemic dining theft in front of his board of directors and the local press..."

"His career is over," I finished for him. "His merger collapses. His high-society friends drop him like a bad habit. And every single dollar he and his snobby wife stole from us—and from the servers at the other four restaurants in this city—gets paid back with mandatory public interest."

Julian sat back in the booth, letting out a long, shuddering breath of disbelief. He looked at me—the poor college student he had yelled at, demeaned, and extorted just forty-eight hours ago—and realized that the power dynamic in this restaurant had shifted permanently.

"Okay," Julian said quietly, raising his hands in absolute surrender. "I’m in. Tell me exactly what you need me to do."
