Chapter 3 - The Architect's Investigation

By noon, Cassian’s internal restraint had evaporated, replaced by a cold, methodical determination. He bypassed normal protocol entirely, summoning Lev Saurin, his head of internal security and a former military-intelligence operative whose loyalty was absolute.
"I need a complete background pull on Aera Quinn," Cassian ordered, his eyes locked on the city below. "Current residence, household composition, financial burdens. Everything. Today."
"How deep, boss?" Lev asked, his voice flat.
"Deep enough to tell me why someone is putting hands on her," Cassian replied coldly.
By mid-afternoon, Lev placed a decrypted file on Cassian’s private terminal. The data revealed a heartbreaking narrative: Aera’s mother had passed away a decade ago, leaving her to care for her nineteen-year-old sister, Maya, a college student. Their father, Dennis Quinn, was a chronic gambler whose weak character had plunged the family into catastrophic debt. Unable to secure legitimate bank loans, Dennis had borrowed from a high-interest private lender—a predatory shadow operation that traced through three layers of corporate shielding straight back to the secondary investment portfolio of Ronin Veyron.
Cassian stared at the screen, a dark realization settling over him.
Ronin was Cassian’s cousin—a volatile, reckless loose cannon who ran private loan-sharking operations and illicit properties in the city’s industrial district without Cassian’s direct supervision. Dennis Quinn had defaulted on his predatory loans, and to extract payment, Ronin’s enforcers had targeted the family, using intimidation, threats, and physical violence against Aera to force compliance. Aera had taken the grueling, high-pressure job at Veyron Tower specifically to siphon her salary into paying off her father's insurmountable debts to the syndicate.
She was working for the very monster that was destroying her family, terrified that if she left, Ronin’s thugs would kill her father or hurt her sister.

Cassian closed the laptop lid. The temperature in the room felt like it had dropped thirty degrees. He picked up his desk phone, dialed Lev directly, and spoke two sentences.
"Find out where Ronin is tonight. Bring him to the private basement garage by midnight."
