Chapter 3 - The Shadow on the Runway

When the flight finally touched down at Miami International Airport, the humid Florida air rushed into the cabin like a warm, wet blanket.

Clare had managed to get the baby—whose name she learned was Leo—to sleep soundly against her chest for the remainder of the flight, while Dante sat across the aisle, watching her with a silent, heavy vigilance that made her skin tingle. He hadn't tried to take Leo back until the seatbelt sign chimed, holding his son with newfound gentleness that surprised her.

As the passengers stood up to grab their overhead luggage, Dante stepped into the aisle beside her, signaling two burly men in sharp black suits who had materialized out of the terminal crowd like ghosts.

“Clare,” Dante said, his towering presence shielding her from the jostling crowd of tourists grabbing their roller bags. “My car is waiting. Let my security team handle your bags.”

“Mr. Salvatore, that’s not necessary,” Clare protested, clutching Maya’s worn backpack tighter. “My cousin is meeting me at baggage claim—”

“Your cousin is driving a ten-year-old Honda Civic with a broken muffler and parked in a red zone three terminals away,” Dante interrupted smoothly, holding up a sleek smartphone where his driver was already feeding him live updates. “And more importantly, you have a tail.”

Clare’s blood ran ice cold. The color drained entirely from her face. “What did you say?”

“Look through the terminal glass toward the arrivals drop-off,” Dante murmured, stepping closer so his broad shoulders blocked her from view. “Tall man, grey hoodie, pacing near the automatic doors, constantly checking his phone while staring at the international arrivals board. He’s been on this flight with us in row thirty-four. He took a photo of you when we boarded in New York.”

Clare peered cautiously through the thick glass. Her stomach plummeted into a bottomless abyss.

It was Mark, one of Richard’s Fix-it guys from Seattle—a local private investigator who moonlighted doing dirty work for corporate compliance firms. Richard had found her. He had tracked her down across the entire country within twenty-four hours of her departure.

“He found me,” Clare whispered, the panic rising in her throat, choking off her air supply. If Richard got her back to Seattle, the temporary custody order would be shredded, her phone would be confiscated, and she would be trapped in that suburban nightmare forever.

“He won't touch you,” Dante said, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register that sent a shiver straight down her spine. He didn't raise his voice, but the two men in black suits instantly shifted their posture, their eyes locking onto the exit doors like hunting dogs picking up a scent.

“Mr. Salvatore, please, I don't want a bloodbath at the airport—” Clare started, grabbing his sleeve.

“In my world, sweetheart, we don't do bloodbaths when children are sleeping,” Dante said, a dark, dangerous smirk touching the corner of his mouth. He signaled his head toward his men. “Bring her bags. And escort our friend in the grey hoodie into a private conversation with federal customs.”

Before Clare could argue, Dante scooped up little Leo with one arm and gently placed his other large, warm hand securely on the small of Clare’s back, guiding her past the baggage claim toward a private executive exit reserved for diplomats and VIPs.

As they walked out into the warm Miami night, she watched out the tinted window of a black armored SUV as four airport security officers and Dante’s men politely—but firmly—surrounded the man in the grey hoodie, pushing him backward against a concrete pillar before he even realized what hit him.

Clare sank into the plush leather seat of the SUV, holding a sleeping Maya in her lap, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Dante sat beside her, strapping baby Leo into a custom infant seat that his staff had miraculously materialized on the tarmac. He turned his dark, intense gaze back to Clare.

“Now,” Dante said quietly as the SUV pulled away from the curb, merging into the glowing Miami highway. “Tell me everything that bastard in Seattle took from you.”
