Chapter 5 - The Sunrise Over Biscayne Bay

Six months later, the Miami skyline was painted in brilliant shades of amber, gold, and coral as the sun rose over the sparkling waters of Biscayne Bay.
Inside the penthouse, the air was filled with the gentle, normal sounds of a home: the soft patter of little feet running across the floor, the cheerful bubbling of coffee brewing in the kitchen, and the sweet, melodic laughter of a three-year-old girl feeding cereal to a very happy puppy.
Clare stood in the doorway of the master suite, wearing an oversized silk shirt, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.
On the king-sized bed, six-month-old Leo was crawling energetically across the duvet, babbling happily while trying to pull the hair of the man lying beside him.
Dante Salvatore—the untouchable king of the East Coast shipping syndicates, the man whose enemies whispered fear in the dark—was currently lying flat on his back, eyes closed, letting a baby use his nose as a climbing gym while a golden-hued morning light spilled across his tattooed shoulders.
Clare couldn't help the bright, genuine laugh that bubbled up in her throat.
Dante opened one dark eye, a slow, lazy smile spreading across his face. He caught Leo by his diaper before the baby could dive off the mattress, pulling his son safely against his chest.
“Good morning, Counselor,” Dante rumbled sleepily, his voice thick with morning warmth.
“Counselor?” Clare raised an eyebrow, walking over to the edge of the bed and sitting down. “Since when am I a counselor?”
“Since you passed the Florida bar exam last week and officially took over the legal compliance division of Salvatore Global,” Dante reminded her, reaching out with his free hand to pull her down beside him onto the mattress.
Clare curled against his warm side, resting her head over his steady, powerful heartbeat. Leo immediately crawled over both of them, burying his face in Clare’s neck with a happy little sigh.
“It’s still hard to believe,” Clare whispered, looking around the bright, sun-drenched room. “A year ago, I was running for my life in the rain.”
“You were surviving,” Dante corrected her gently, his arm wrapping securely around her waist, locking her into his world with a permanence that nothing could ever break. “Now, you’re home.”

Down below, on the private docks of Biscayne Bay, the container ships bearing the Salvatore crest moved smoothly across the water, carrying cargo and commerce under the protection of an empire that had finally learned how to heal. But up here, in the quiet warmth of the penthouse, there were no enemies left to fight, no secrets to hide, and no fears left to run from.
Clare closed her eyes, breathing in the scent of cedar, coffee, and safety, knowing that the storm was finally over.
