Chapter 2 - The Anatomy of a Collapse

The next three days were a masterclass in controlled detachment. Mariana moved through the house like a ghost, packing only what was hers. She left the expensive furniture, the art, and the decor—the items Alexander and Renata so desperately craved. She took only the things that mattered: her career documents, her personal heirlooms, and the hard drives containing the proof of the life she had funded.

She watched from the peripheral as Alexander grew increasingly agitated. His phone buzzed incessantly. The playful tone he used with Renata had vanished, replaced by sharp, panicked outbursts.

"I don't know what you're talking about, Mark!" she heard him shouting into the phone from the foyer. "It’s a misunderstanding! She’s a liar, she’s trying to manipulate you!"

Mariana walked calmly into the kitchen, pouring a glass of water. Alexander whipped around, his face flushed, eyes wide with a frantic, animal terror.

"What did you do?" he hissed, abandoning the phone call. "Mark just called me. He’s threatening a lawsuit. He’s talking about 'forensic accounting' and 'divorce proceedings.' What did you send him, Mariana?"

"I sent him the truth, Alexander," she said, taking a sip of water. "I sent him the receipts for the hotel stays in the city during your 'client retreats.' I sent him the bank statements showing the 'consulting fees' you funneled into Renata’s private accounts—accounts I actually monitored because I’m the one who did your taxes for years."

He lunged toward her, stopping short only when he saw the look in her eyes. It wasn't fear. It was a cold, impenetrable steel.

"You’re going to destroy us," he breathed, his voice breaking. "Renata will be ruined. I’ll lose everything."

"You already lost everything," Mariana countered, her voice icy. "You lost your family when you decided I was a temporary fixture. You lost your home when you decided that your ex-wife was a better partner than your wife. And now, you’ve lost the illusion that I was a passive participant in my own exploitation."

He backed away, shaking his head. "We had a life, Mariana! A real life!"

"No," she corrected, walking toward the stairs. "You had a financier. And as of December 23rd, the funding is officially pulled."
