Chapter 5 - The New Horizon

Seattle was rainy, grey, and beautiful.

Mariana stood on the balcony of her new apartment, looking out over the Puget Sound. Her desk was organized, her future was secure, and for the first time in a decade, she wasn't living for anyone else’s approval.
Her phone buzzed. It was a message from an unknown number. Her heart skipped a beat, then leveled out. She opened it.
It was a photo. A grainy, poorly lit picture of a drawing. It was a picture of two stick figures: one tall, one small, holding hands under a bright sun. At the bottom, in shaky ten-year-old handwriting, were the words: I miss you. I remember everything.
Tears, long held back, finally pricked her eyes. She wouldn't call back. Not yet. She knew the legal battles would be long, and she knew she had to win them on her own terms, not as a woman begging for time, but as a force of nature that the courts couldn't ignore.
She stood at the precipice of a new life. She had been the "hired help" in her old life, the silent, invisible engine of a machine that didn't appreciate her. Now, she was the pilot of her own destiny.

She set her phone down and turned back toward her apartment. There was work to be done, a career to build, and a future to reclaim. She was no longer the quiet wife in the background.
She was Mariana, and for the first time, she was finally home.
