Chapter 4 - The Reckoning

The fallout was catastrophic.

By the time Alexander and Renata reached Aspen, they weren't greeted by luxury; they were greeted by process servers. Mark, a man of immense resources and limited patience, hadn't just filed for divorce. He had initiated a full-scale audit of every single venture Alexander and Renata had touched.
The "peace" Alexander had sought was replaced by a firestorm.
The story hit the local papers within forty-eight hours. The "perfect family" imploded in spectacular fashion. Renata’s social standing dissolved as Mark’s lawyers laid out the evidence of her double life, exposing her as a manipulator who had used Alexander’s failing firm to launder her own lifestyle expenses.
Alexander was left standing in the wreckage of a rented condo in Aspen, his credit cards declined, his cell phone blowing up with alerts about the foreclosure of the Brooklyn home. He was a man with no home, no career, and an ex-wife who wouldn't even look at him, let alone speak to him.
And then, there was the silence of the child.
Camila didn't speak for days. She withdrew into herself, a quiet, observant child who suddenly saw the adults in her life for exactly what they were. She saw her father’s panic, her mother’s vanity, and the absence of the only person who had ever truly known how to tie her shoes or calm her fears.

Alexander tried to reach Mariana. He called her office, but her assistant blocked him. He sent emails, but they bounced back as "Undelivered." He realized, with a soul-crushing finality, that Mariana hadn't just left; she had scrubbed him from her existence with the same efficiency she had once used to balance his books.
He was entirely, terrifyingly alone.
