Chapter 1 - The Anatomy of a Setup

The fluorescent lights of Terminal 3 hummed a sterile, headache-inducing tune, casting a harsh glare over the polished marble floors where hundreds of travelers rushed to and fro. But my world had narrowed down to a single, agonizing focal point roughly thirty feet away.
Derek’s broad shoulders were unmistakable. The tailored navy blazer I had helped him pick out for what he claimed was a "mandatory corporate crisis seminar in Seattle" fit him like a glove. The problem was, Seattle was northwest, and the departure board overhead clearly flashed flights to Los Cabos, Mexico. Worse still, his hands were not tapping away at a spreadsheet. They were cradling the delicate face of Clara, my maid of honor, my ride-or-die since the fourth grade, who was supposed to be sitting by her mother’s hospital bed three states away.
My fingers went slack. The oversized cardboard sign reading WELCOME HOME NOLAN! hit the floor with a soft, pathetic thud.
The betrayal didn't hit me all at once; it rolled over me in suffocating, crushing waves. Every text message, every late-night "emergency meeting," every hesitation when I brought up wedding venue deposits—it all snapped into sharp, unforgiving focus. They weren't just sneaking around. They were living a double life, building a fortress of lies on the foundation of my absolute trust, with our wedding invitations sitting proudly on refrigerators across the city.
"Don't shed a single tear for them, Emily," Nolan’s voice cut through the roaring blood in my ears, sharp and cold as a winter blade. "And do not make a public scene."
I spun around, tears hot and blinding in my eyes. Nolan towered over me, his sharp charcoal suit unwrinkled despite a grueling fourteen-hour flight from Singapore. His steel-gray eyes weren't sad; they were calculating. They were the eyes of a man who managed hostile takeovers of multi-million-dollar corporations for breakfast.
"I have to go over there, Nolan!" I choked out, my voice cracking with a mixture of raw grief and homicidal rage. "I have to rip that smug look off his face and scratch her eyes out!"
"And give them the satisfaction of playing the victim?" Nolan's grip on my shoulder remained unyielding, a grounding anchor in a storm. "If you make a scene here, Derek will spin it. He’ll call you unstable, emotional, hysterical. He’ll walk away looking like the victim of a jealous bride, and Clara will dab her fake tears with a designer handkerchief. Do you want that? Do you want to hand them an easy out?"
I swallowed hard, the lump in my throat feeling like crushed glass. "No," I whispered.
"Good," Nolan said, a terrifying, predatory smile touching the corner of his lips. "Play the ignorant fool for twenty-four hours. Let them board that flight. Let them drink their overpriced champagne in first class. Because by tomorrow night, I swear to you, they are going to lose every single thing they own."

As we watched, Derek pulled back, grinning broadly as he handed Clara her boarding pass. They picked up their matching designer luggage and strolled toward the security checkpoint, utterly oblivious to the storm brewing directly behind them. Nolan retrieved my discarded welcome sign, tossed it casually into a nearby recycling bin, and looped his arm through mine.
"Come on, little sister," he murmured smoothly, guiding me toward the VIP exit. "Let’s go home and check the financials."
