Chapter 2 - The Silence Before the Storm

The ride back to my downtown penthouse was eerily quiet. While the old me would have been sobbing into my palms, staring hopelessly at the engagement ring on my left ring finger, the presence of my brother forged a strange, cold armor around my heart. Nolan didn't offer empty platitudes or cheap comfort. Instead, as soon as we stepped through the double doors of my apartment, he tossed his briefcase onto the glass coffee table and popped open his high-end laptop.

"Sit," he commanded gently, gesturing to the velvet sofa.

I obeyed, wrapping my arms around myself as if I could physically hold my shattered pieces together. "Nolan... what do you mean they’ll lose everything? Derek is a senior partner at Vanguard Architecture. Clara works as a lead brand strategist. They make good money, but they aren't billionaires."

Nolan didn't look up from his screen, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard with rhythmic precision. "Derek isn't just a senior partner, Em. Three months ago, when I was overseas, he pitched me an ambitious commercial real estate venture. He claimed he needed seed capital for an eco-friendly smart-city complex. I backed it through my syndicate to the tune of five million dollars."

My jaw dropped. "Five million dollars? Derek never told me about this!"

"Of course he didn't," Nolan replied, his voice dripping with dry disdain. "Because the contract explicitly stipulates that the funding is tied to his personal solvency, pristine credit, and my direct oversight. Furthermore, the collateral he used to secure his personal guarantee on that loan wasn't his penthouse—it was the house his parents left him, plus the joint business accounts you two set up for the wedding."

He spun the laptop around so the screen faced me. I blinked at the dense web of financial documents, liability clauses, and wire transfers.

"Look closer," Nolan instructed, pointing a manicured finger at a highlighted paragraph. "Derek leveraged your joint wedding fund—every penny you saved, plus the fifty thousand dollars our aunt gifted you—as operating capital for a shell company he registered last month. Under Clara’s maiden name."

The room seemed to spin. "Clara's name?"

"And that’s not the best part," Nolan continued, a dark, amusement dancing in his eyes. "Derek thinks he’s clever. He drafted a prenup for your upcoming marriage designed to protect his assets in case of a divorce, completely unaware that I had my corporate legal team review it six months ago. It contains a fatal flaw—a clause regarding financial fidelity and moral integrity. If either party commits fraud or gross breach of trust before the nuptials, the contract nullifies instantly, transferring 100 percent of the jointly held assets and business holdings to the injured party."

I stared at my older brother, feeling a chill run down my spine. "Nolan... did you know about this all along?"

Nolan leaned back, crossing his legs. "I suspected Derek was a fraud from the day he proposed. Men who look at a woman’s bank account before her eyes usually have hidden agendas. I simply gave him enough rope to hang himself. And tonight, while they are cruising at thirty thousand feet drinking complimentary champagne, the trap springs shut."

My phone buzzed on the coffee table. I flinched. The screen lit up with a text message from Derek:

Hey gorgeous! Mandatory seminar is dragging forever. Missing you terribly. Going to grab a quick dinner with the team and crash early. Wish you were here! ❤️

I stared at the glowing screen, a bitter, humorless laugh escaping my lips. I looked up at Nolan, who raised a single eyebrow.

"Reply," Nolan instructed calmly. "Play your part."

With trembling fingers, I tapped out the response: Have fun, babe. Don't work too hard. See you when you get back. Love you!

May you like

Derek replied instantly: Love you more.

"Good girl," Nolan said, standing up and stretching his broad shoulders. "Now, go take a hot shower, put on something comfortable, and get some sleep. Tomorrow is going to be a very busy day."
