Chapter 3 - The Awakening of the Vixen

The next morning dawned with a crisp, autumn sun streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my penthouse. For a brief, terrifying second, I forgot everything that had happened. I reached across the king-sized mattress, expecting to feel Derek’s warm arm draped over my waist.
Instead, my hand hit empty, cold sheets.
The memories rushed back like a tidal wave. The image of Derek kissing Clara in Terminal 3 flashed behind my eyelids. But this time, the white-hot fury of yesterday had crystallized into a cold, unbreakable resolve. I threw off the duvet, walked into the walk-in closet, and deliberately stripped off the dainty, floral loungewear I usually wore.
Today called for armor.
I pulled out a tailored, obsidian-black Versace pantsuit, paired it with crimson Louboutin pumps, and swept my hair back into a sleek, razor-sharp ponytail. When I walked out into the kitchen, Nolan was already there, impeccably dressed in a custom navy suit, sipping black coffee while reviewing a stack of crisp legal documents.
He looked up, and for the first time, a genuine smile of approval touched his lips. "Now that," he said, tapping the counter, "is the face of a woman ready to reclaim her empire."
"What’s the game plan?" I asked, pouring myself a cup of dark roast.
"Phase One is already in motion," Nolan replied smoothly. "At 8:00 AM sharp, my legal team officially filed a motion of default against Derek’s shell company, citing breach of fiduciary duty and fraudulent misrepresentation. Because the collateral was backed by our syndicate, the courts automatically froze all of his personal accounts, his business assets, and his corporate credit cards by 9:15 AM."
I sipped my coffee, feeling a thrilling rush of adrenaline. "And Clara?"
"Clara’s marketing agency relies heavily on a major corporate contract with my overseas holding company," Nolan said, his eyes glinting with amusement. "At 9:30 AM, our procurement director sent an email terminating their partnership effective immediately, citing a 'conflict of ethical standards.' Furthermore, her landlords received an anonymous tip regarding unauthorized subletting of her studio apartment—which she was planning to abandon anyway to move in with Derek after the wedding."
Just as Nolan finished speaking, my phone buzzed violently against the marble countertop.
It wasn't a text message this time. It was a video call from Derek.
I looked at Nolan. He nodded slowly, gesturing for me to put it on speaker and place the phone in the center of the island. I took a deep breath, schooling my features into a mask of utter, pristine innocence, and tapped the accept button.
Derek’s face popped onto the screen. But the charming, confident corporate executive from yesterday was entirely gone. Behind him, the tropical backdrop of a luxury Cabo resort was visible, but Derek looked like he had just seen a ghost. His hair was disheveled, his eyes were bloodshot, and he was staring frantically into the camera.
"Emily! Thank God!" Derek blurted out, his voice cracking with sheer panic. "Em, listen to me, something is terribly wrong. I—I tried to pay for breakfast at the resort restaurant just now, and my corporate card was declined. Then I checked my banking app... Em, all my personal accounts are frozen. There's a court injunction on my assets!"
I leaned against the counter, taking a slow sip of my coffee, letting the silence stretch just long enough to make him sweat. "Frozen, Derek? But you’re just at a corporate seminar in Seattle, right? Why would your bank freeze accounts in Mexico?"
Derek froze, his eyes darting frantically off-screen before snapping back to the camera. "I—uh—well, the seminar got moved! Last minute! To a resort convention center here in Cabo! You know how corporate retreats are, they mix business with pleasure, and—and my cards must have flagged international fraud!"
"That’s strange," I replied sweetly, tilting my head. "Because I just spoke with your office downtown. They said you haven't logged a single hour of work this week, and HR had no idea you were out of the country."
A drop of sweat rolled down Derek’s temple. "Em, babe, you're not listening to me. We have a bigger problem. My company accounts are wiped out. The house, the wedding funds... everything is gone. The bank says a high-level corporate audit flagged our joint wedding account for unauthorized asset shifting!"
"Oh, you mean the fifty thousand dollars my aunt gave us?" I asked, my voice dropping its sweet cadence, turning razor-sharp. "The money you funneled into a secret shell company under Clara's maiden name?"
Derek turned completely pale. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a corpse under the Mexican sun. "Em... how... how could you possibly know about that?"
Before he could stammer another syllable, a soft, seductive voice echoed from somewhere behind him in the hotel room.

"Derek, babe, room service is here, do you want me to sign for the mimosas?"
Clara walked into the frame, wearing a silk designer robe, her hair tousled from sleep, holding a room service menu. She stopped dead in her tracks the moment she saw my face staring back at them from the phone screen.
