Chapter 1 - The Midnight Call of Vengeance

The red wine soaked through the custom Parisian silk, clinging to my skin like heavy, warm blood. Around me, the glittering ballroom of the Boston harbor hotel felt suddenly claustrophobic, suffocating under the weight of three hundred staring, judgmental eyes. My father, Aidan, still held the microphone, his chest puffed out with the toxic satisfaction of a man who believed he had permanently crushed his oldest daughter. My mother’s sneer was practically carved into her face, her whisper of "pathetic spinster" echoing off the crystal chandeliers.
They thought they had won. They thought I would burst into tears, grab my handbag, and flee into the rainy Boston night like I used to do a decade ago.
Instead, I reached slowly into my clutch, my fingers wrapping around the cold metal of my phone. The screen was illuminated with a single unread text message from an encrypted number: “We are at the security gates. Give the word, sweetheart.”
I didn’t blink. I raised my phone, tapped the screen twice, and hit send.
My father cleared his throat, adjusting his expensive Italian tie, preparing to deliver the final psychological blow before returning to Fiona’s royal reception. "Well, Mabel, since you're clearly incapable of behaving in polite society, perhaps you should head back to your little studio apartment. We ordered you an Uber. It's waiting outside in the alley."
"An Uber, Dad?" I finally spoke, my voice cutting through the ambient hum of the room like a razor blade. I stepped away from the dark corner, letting the crimson stain on my platinum gown catch the glaring spotlight. "You always were terrible at estimating expenses. An Uber can't carry four armed security specialists, nor can it hold the man who just bought out the mortgage on this entire hotel thirty minutes ago."

Tiffany laughed nervously from the front row, though her eyes flicked toward the grand double doors with sudden unease. "Oh, stop it, Mabel. Who are you trying to impress? Your imaginary boyfriend? The cat shelter manager?"
Before anyone could reply, the heavy mahogany doors at the back of the ballroom didn't just open—they slammed violently against the interior walls, echoing like a gunshot through the room.
