Chapter 4 - The Public Confession

The color completely drained from Aidan’s face. He looked out at the sea of Boston elites—the very people whose respect and validation he had spent his entire life currying. Every single eye was now fixed on him, not with admiration, but with cold, calculating shock. The whispers had already started rippling through the tables like wildfire.

"Do it," Julian commanded, his voice like the crack of a whip.

With shaking hands, my father reached out and grabbed the microphone from the stand. The feedback shrieked through the speakers, making several guests wince. Aidan swallowed hard, his throat dry, his expensive suit suddenly looking far too large for his shrinking frame.

"Ladies... ladies and gentlemen," Aidan began, his voice trembling so badly he could barely form the words. "I... I need to make an announcement. A public retraction."

He paused, casting a desperate, pleading look in my direction. I didn't flinch. I just stared back, my arms crossed over Julian’s coat, watching my tormentor finally taste the ash of his own arrogance.

"I... I have been a cruel father," Aidan stammered into the mic, the confession broadcast across the entire ballroom for every wealthy stranger to hear. "I humiliated my eldest daughter, Mabel. I lied about her character, I allowed my family to abuse her, and... and I am a deeply flawed, dishonest man. Furthermore... due to severe financial irregularities within my company... Vance & Sterling is currently facing federal receivership. This wedding... is over."

A collective gasp erupted through the room. Cameras flashed from smartphones at nearly every table. The illusion of the mighty Vance dynasty shattered into dust in less than sixty seconds.

Mother buried her face in her hands, sobbing loudly into the linen tablecloth, while Tiffany glared at me with pure, unadulterated venom, realizing her lavish trust fund had just vanished into thin air.

Julian didn't wait for my father to finish his humiliating speech. He wrapped a strong, warm arm around my waist, pulling me tight against his side.

"Come on, sweetheart," Julian murmured softly, his tone shifting instantly from ruthless executive to tender husband. "Let's leave this circus behind. Our private jet is waiting at Logan Airport, and I had our chef prepare your favorite dinner at the penthouse."
