Chapter 1 - The Servant’s Apron

The polished marble floor of our sprawling suburban foyer mirrored the glittering crystal chandeliers, reflecting a world built entirely on illusion, debt, and cruel pretension. Three hours before the arrival of Halcyon Global’s elite executive roster, my husband, Adrian, had walked into our master dressing room carrying a heavy black garment bag. He unzipped it with an air of clinical detachment, pulling out a plain, austere black dress with a stiff white maid’s apron folded neatly on top.
"Wear this," he commanded, tossing the fabric onto the edge of the bed as if he were tossing a rag to a menial employee. "My new colleagues must think we have proper domestic help tonight. Appearance is everything."
I stared down at the apron, the cheap polyester contrasting sharply with the silk wrap dress I had planned to wear. "I’m your wife, Adrian. We've been married for four years, and this is your regional promotion party."
"Tonight, you’re whatever I need you to be," he snapped, his voice dropping into that familiar, chilling register that had chipped away at my spirit ever since he systematically drained my independent savings account and isolated me from my college friends during our first year of marriage.
His mother, Celeste, leaned against the doorframe, a thin, malicious smile twisting her lips. "Be grateful he even lets you live under his roof, Mara. You've never contributed a real dime to this household. The least you can do is look the part when men of actual importance walk through these doors."
I didn't argue. I didn't cry or scream. I had learned long ago that fighting back verbally only fueled their sadistic desire to break me further. Instead, I tied the white apron strings tightly around my waist, letting Adrian believe that silence equaled total surrender. He had believed that comforting lie for four years, entirely unaware that the quiet, submissive woman folding laundry and managing household ledgers was running an entirely different kind of operation behind his back.
By eight o’clock, the house was packed with wealthy tech executives, lawyers, and regional directors. Adrian had just been promoted to regional finance director of Halcyon Global, a multi-billion-dollar technology empire founded by the legendary and notoriously ruthless Gabriel Vale. Adrian moved among the guests like royalty, laughing loudly, flashing expensive cuff links, and boasting about corporate discipline, absolute loyalty, and "knowing how to control weak people."

I moved through the crowd quietly, carrying heavy silver trays of hors d'oeuvres, pouring imported vintage wine, and listening to the arrogant murmurs of men who thought power made them gods. I was invisible to them. Just part of the upscale scenery.
Until the smoke started crawling from the kitchen.
