Chapter 3 - The Ghost from the Past

A collective, stunned gasp rippled through the packed dining room. Adrian’s triumphant smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a twitching, nervous grimace as he tried to laugh off the escalating tension.
"Sir, please—don't listen to her," Adrian stammered, stepping forward with a desperate, ingratiating smile, his hands outstretched in a placating gesture. "She’s just an imaginative girl, she tells melodramatic stories whenever she wants attention. You know how wives are—always seeking drama—"
Gabriel didn't even glance at Adrian. His entire world had narrowed down to the small silver pendant in his palm and the bruised, bleeding woman standing before him in a maid's apron. He stepped past my husband as if Adrian were nothing more than a speck of dust on the carpet.
"Look at me," Gabriel commanded softly, reaching out to gently cup my cheek with a warmth that felt entirely foreign after four years of Adrian’s emotional abuse. "What is your exact birth date?"
"October seventeenth," I answered steadily.
Gabriel’s knees nearly buckled. He caught himself against the edge of the mahogany dining table, his breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps. "October seventeenth... twenty-two years ago. The exact day. The exact hour." He looked up, tears pooling in the corners of his sharp, intelligent eyes. "I searched for you for decades, Mara. Every private investigator, every database in the world... I never stopped looking."
Across the room, standing near the doorway, Celeste dropped her wineglass. The sound of breaking crystal was sharp and sudden.
That specific reaction—far more than Gabriel’s shock—ignited a blazing fire of realization in my chest. Celeste didn't look merely surprised; she looked terrified. She looked like a woman who recognized a ghost she thought she had buried forever.
I wiped the remaining blood from my lip and locked eyes with my mother-in-law. Celeste knew something. She knew far more than she was letting on, and the panic flashing in her aged eyes confirmed every lingering suspicion I had harbored about the true nature of my abandonment.
Adrian, sensing his entire carefully constructed career evaporating before his eyes, grabbed my shoulder roughly, trying to yank me backward. "Get away from him, Mara! This is a scam! She’s mentally unstable, she’s trying to sabotage my promotion—security, get her out of—"
"Shut your mouth, you pathetic little fraud," Gabriel roared. The sheer, terrifying authority in the billionaire's voice echoed off the vaulted ceilings, silencing Adrian instantly. Gabriel motioned with his hand, and two massive corporate security guards who had accompanied him stepped forward, pinning Adrian's arms behind his back before he could utter another word.

"You raised your hand against my daughter," Gabriel whispered, stepping toward Adrian with a cold, predatory menace that made my husband turn white with sheer terror. "You dressed her like a servant in her own home. And you thought you were going to walk away with a regional directorship."
Adrian’s legs gave out, and he slumped toward the floor, whimpering as the reality of his total destruction began to set in.
