Chapter 3 - THE SIGNATURE THEY NEEDED

Rocco read the amendment twice while Jamie slept beside him.
The Moretti Family Trust controlled sixty-one percent of Moretti Development Group, a construction and infrastructure company employing nearly eighteen hundred people. Rocco served as chief executive and held a personal veto over changes affecting his branch of the trust. His late grandmother Sofia had given him that authority twenty years earlier, when she recognized that Victor and Brandon treated family assets as extensions of their own power.
The amendment had been presented as routine paperwork connected to a sixty-two-million-dollar refinancing package.
It was not routine.
Section Fourteen excluded adopted children, stepchildren, and children conceived through donors from the definition of descendant. Another provision stated that if Rocco reached forty-five without a biological son, the voting rights assigned to his branch would pass into a subtrust controlled by Brandon.
The beneficiary named beneath that subtrust was Theo.
Bianca’s son was an innocent child. Rocco did not believe his sister knew anything about the document. Brandon had used Theo’s name because it gave his plan the appearance of preserving a bloodline rather than seizing control.
Victor called at midnight.
“You assaulted your father,” he said without greeting.
“He raised a bat over Jamie.”
“He struck a table.”
“Six inches from a seven-year-old’s head.”
“Brandon lost his temper. That does not justify endangering the company.”
Rocco walked into the hallway so Jamie would not hear. “You sat there and watched.”
“I believed Brandon would stop.”
“You told Jamie that I needed to learn what my choices cost.”
Victor did not deny it. “You have allowed grief to make permanent decisions. Elena has been gone eighteen months. You could remarry. You could have children of your own.”
“Jamie is my own.”
“You know what I mean.”
“Yes,” Rocco said. “For the first time, I know exactly what you mean.”
Victor warned him that refusing the amendment could trigger the bank’s right to review the company’s entire credit structure. Projects might stall. Employees might lose their jobs. The family name could be damaged after ninety years.
Rocco had spent his adult life protecting those employees and projects. Victor knew which fear to use because he had helped place it inside him.
“Send me the original trust, every draft of this amendment, and every disbursement made from the family accounts during the past three years,” Rocco said.
“You are in no position to demand anything.”
“I’m the trust protector whose signature you need. That places me in exactly the right position.”
Victor’s voice hardened. “Are you really prepared to sacrifice everything for a boy who was not born a Moretti?”
Rocco looked through the bedroom doorway at Jamie. Even asleep, the boy’s fingers remained closed around the emergency handset.
“No,” Rocco said. “I’m prepared to sacrifice the people who made him need that phone.”
He ended the call and contacted the independent trustees who had been inside the study. Before sunrise, they issued a temporary freeze preventing Victor or Brandon from transferring trust assets until the amendment and the incident were reviewed.
