Chapter 7 - WHAT BLOOD WAS HIDING
The forensic audit uncovered eleven million four hundred thousand dollars in unauthorized transfers.
Brandon had invested the money in a luxury development outside Tampa that failed before construction began. Rather than admit the loss, he created Theo Legacy Partnership and recorded the transfers as advances made for a biological descendant. Victor approved the entries because exposing Brandon would have threatened the family’s reputation and their control of the trust.
The proposed amendment was intended to legalize the transfers retroactively.
Rocco met Victor in his former office after the auditors completed their preliminary report. An independent attorney remained present, and the conversation was recorded with everyone’s consent.
“Did you know Brandon intended to frighten Jamie at the barbecue?” Rocco asked.
Victor looked toward the windows. “I knew he planned to establish boundaries.”
“With a bat?”
“No.”
“But when he took it from the wall, you stopped the housekeeper from intervening.”
Victor closed his eyes. “I believed he was making a point.”
“What point requires a seven-year-old to cover his head?”
“That you could not continue forcing the entire family to accept a decision you made while grieving.”
Rocco’s hands tightened beneath the table. “I adopted Jamie before Elena became sick.”
“You married a woman with a child. You made an emotional commitment. That did not require restructuring everything Sofia and I built.”
“Sofia already included adopted children.”
Victor’s face hardened. “That clause was sentimental.”
“She was adopted.”
“She became a Moretti through marriage.”
“No,” Rocco said. “She became your family because she chose you. You spent sixty years benefiting from that choice and then erased the part of her life that made your definition of blood inconvenient.”
Victor finally admitted that he had approved the unauthorized transfers. He believed Brandon could recover the money once the Tampa project was refinanced. When that failed, they needed Rocco’s signature before the next annual trust audit.
“Why let Brandon attack Jamie before I signed?” Rocco asked.
Victor looked exhausted. “Because Brandon believed that if the boy became uncomfortable enough, you would stop bringing him here. Once he disappeared from family life, the amendment would feel less personal.”
“He was supposed to vanish quietly.”
Victor said nothing.
“That is what the empty chair meant,” Rocco continued. “You wanted Jamie to understand that his place could always be taken.”
“I wanted the family preserved.”
“You wanted obedience preserved.”
The independent trustees referred the financial findings to prosecutors and filed civil claims against both men. Victor resigned as chairman of Moretti Development the following morning. Brandon was terminated from every paid position and ordered to surrender his company accounts.
