Chapter 6 - “FAMILY DISCIPLINE”

The emergency trust hearing took place five days later in the same study where Jamie’s call had rung.
Rocco refused to bring him back to Victor’s estate. Jamie’s recorded interview, the clinic report, witness statements, and Mara’s unedited video were enough. No seven-year-old needed to enter the room where adults would debate whether his terror qualified as abuse.
Brandon sat beside his attorney with the fading outline of Rocco’s hand still visible on his cheek. Victor occupied his usual chair at the end of the conference table, although for the first time no one waited for him to speak first.
Rocco addressed his own conduct before either man could weaponize it.
“I struck Brandon after removing the bat and while he was reaching toward Jamie again. I reported that truth to the police. I will accept the lawful determination. I will not hide my actions, and I will not permit him to hide his.”
Mara’s recording played.
The trustees watched Brandon remove Jamie’s plate, block the doorway, retrieve the bat, and strike the table. They heard Victor tell the housekeeper not to intervene. They watched Jamie crawl away and press the emergency button.
When the video ended, Brandon leaned forward.
“I never touched the child.”
“You made him believe you were about to,” one trustee said.
“It was discipline.”
Rocco placed a photograph of the table’s deep bat-shaped dent in front of him. “If your aim had been six inches farther left, we would be discussing Jamie’s funeral.”
Brandon’s attorney objected, but the trustees had already heard enough.
Victor attempted a different defense. He spoke about the refinancing deadline, eighteen hundred employees, unfinished hospitals, municipal contracts, and the family’s obligations. He suggested postponing the fiduciary decision until the company stabilized.
Rocco opened a separate folder.
“I secured a ninety-day bridge facility yesterday,” he said. “It protects payroll and every active project while the company completes an independent governance review.”
Victor stared at him. “Using what collateral?”
“My personal shares and the contracts I brought into the company—not the family trust.”
The employees had never needed Victor and Brandon to remain in control. They had needed competent financing. Rocco had removed the excuse they intended to use as a shield.
The independent trustees voted unanimously to confirm both suspensions. Brandon was removed as successor trustee. Victor lost all authority to transfer, pledge, or amend trust assets. An external accounting firm received immediate access to the books.
When the meeting ended, Brandon stood directly in front of Rocco.
“You destroyed this family over somebody else’s son.”
Rocco did not step back. “You raised a weapon over my son. You destroyed your place in his family.”

For once, Brandon had no table, title, or older man behind him.
He left without another word.
