Chapter 3 - CONTAINER 6117

Pier 12 appeared abandoned, but shadows moved along the upper walkways. Cargo cranes towered above the loading lanes while black water reflected strips of industrial light.

Luca’s remaining loyal men found container 6117 near the freighter platform. Its exterior seal matched Kenji’s manifest.

Luca pressed his ear against the steel wall.

Three soft knocks answered.

“Vanessa,” Lauren whispered.

Luca cut the seal and pulled the doors open.

Vanessa lay near the entrance with her wrists bound. Ten other captives crowded behind her. Lauren rushed forward, but Vanessa’s expression changed from relief to terror.

“Trap.”

Floodlights ignited across the pier.

Armed men emerged between the surrounding containers. Some belonged to Ishida. Others wore Moretti colors.

Gabriel stepped onto the loading platform beside Agent Nolan Price.

Luca’s men raised their weapons, but nearly half immediately turned their guns toward him.

Gabriel smiled. “You always mistook obedience for loyalty.”

Price dragged Lauren away from the container before Luca could reach her. Gabriel’s men seized Vanessa and forced the other captives back inside.

Luca stood in the open with six guns aimed at his chest.

“Why her?” he asked, looking at Lauren.

“She found Kenji,” Gabriel answered. “Vanessa found Price. Both became liabilities.”

“And Alessia?”

Gabriel’s smile disappeared.

He removed an old silver bracelet from his pocket.

Luca recognized it immediately. His sister had worn it the night she vanished.

Gabriel tossed it onto the concrete. “Alessia found my first manifest. Your sister always wandered into rooms where adults were conducting business.”

“You sold her.”

“I exchanged her for access to Ishida’s shipping routes. Your father blamed the Russians exactly as I intended. The war weakened both families and left the port to us.”

Fifteen years of loyalty collapsed in one sentence.

Lauren understood why Gabriel had remained beside Luca. He had not protected the grieving young heir.

He had built an empire around Luca’s grief.

“Where is she?” Luca asked.

“She died before reaching Osaka.”

Luca stared at the bracelet but did not move.

Gabriel pointed toward Lauren. “Her camera recorded Kenji’s execution, Price’s voice, my men, and your raid. I want every copy.”

“You know journalists create backups.”

“Then she gives us the passwords.”

“And afterward?”

Gabriel smiled again. “You already know.”

Price forced Lauren to her knees and pressed a gun against her head.

Luca’s hand moved toward his weapon.

Every gun surrounding him tightened.

Gabriel handed him a phone. “At midnight, bring me the Moretti black ledger. Every account, payment, judge, detective, and politician your family ever purchased. In exchange, you receive the reporter.”

“Vanessa and the others?”

“They leave on the ship.”

“No.”

Gabriel pushed the gun harder against Lauren’s head.

Luca looked into her eyes.

“Midnight,” he said.

They released him beyond the port gate and kept Lauren, Vanessa, and the captives inside container 6117.

Gabriel believed he had won.

He did not know Lauren’s lapel camera was still transmitting.

Every word of his confession had already reached her encrypted server.
