Chapter 5 - EVERYTHING HE LOST
Luca survived two surgeries.
Federal agents arrested him in the hospital four days later.
Lauren stood beside his bed while Maya Chen read the charges: racketeering, conspiracy, bribery, obstruction, and financial crimes drawn from years of Moretti records.
Luca signed the acknowledgment without protest.
“You saved forty-three people,” Lauren said after the agents left.
“That does not resurrect the people my organization hurt.”
“You surrendered everything.”
“I surrendered evidence after spending seventeen years benefiting from the crimes it proved.”
He refused to call himself a hero, and Lauren understood why. Saving her had been courageous, but courage did not erase history. Redemption that required everyone to forget earlier victims was only another form of selfishness.
Vanessa recovered in a protected hospital wing. She confirmed Gabriel and Price had abducted her after she met Kenji. They forced her to send Lauren the warehouse location because Lauren possessed notes connecting the trafficking network to federal officials. Gabriel planned to kill both journalists, seize their files, and blame their deaths on Ishida.
The black ledger revealed something else.
Ten years earlier, Gabriel had ordered gunfire outside a Brooklyn restaurant to conceal the theft of a Moretti shipment. A stray bullet killed an office manager waiting at a bus stop.
Her name was Rachel Mitchell.
Lauren’s mother.
Luca asked to see Lauren after he learned. He did not soften the truth.
“Gabriel ordered the shooting, but my organization created the war that placed those men there.”
“Did you know?”
“Not until the ledger was decrypted.”
“Would you tell me if it implicated you directly?”
“Yes.”
“How can I believe that?”
“You shouldn’t believe anything simply because I ask you to.”
The answer infuriated her because it was honest.
Lauren and Vanessa spent three months verifying the investigation. They interviewed survivors only when advocates confirmed it was safe. They withheld names and identifying details while exposing the trafficking network, Price’s corruption, Gabriel’s betrayal, and the Moretti organization’s crimes.
Their investigation was titled “The Containers Beneath Newark.”
Gabriel received life in federal prison for trafficking, conspiracy, and murder. Nolan Price received twenty-eight years. The Ishida organization lost its American leadership, and international investigators identified routes crossing four countries.
Records also led authorities to a burial site outside Yokohama. DNA confirmed that one set of remains belonged to Alessia Moretti.
Luca finally brought his sister home.
He attended the funeral in restraints and placed her recovered silver bracelet on the coffin.
Months later, he pleaded guilty to racketeering and related offenses. Prosecutors acknowledged that his cooperation dismantled multiple criminal organizations and saved dozens of lives.
The judge also named the people harmed by Moretti operations.
“No courageous decision gives this court permission to forget earlier victims.”
Luca received eight years in federal prison, with credit for time served. His criminal assets were forfeited and directed toward restitution and survivor services.
Before marshals led him away, he looked toward Lauren.
“Don’t wait for me.”
“You still think you can give me instructions?”
“For some reason, I keep trying.”
Lauren did not promise to wait.
Three months later, however, she wrote him a letter.
Not a love letter.
She told him about Vanessa returning to journalism, the youngest girl from the first container beginning school, and the first corrupt official convicted because of his ledger. She also asked what accountability meant when the courtroom stopped watching.
