Chapter 4 - GOODBYE

At 11:58, Luca returned to the port carrying a black encrypted drive containing the Moretti ledger. He came alone, unarmed, and without protective armor.

Gabriel held Lauren beside the loading platform. Vanessa remained inside container 6117 with the other captives. Price stood near the crane controls while Yakuza gunmen watched from the upper walkways.

Luca stopped beneath the floodlights.

“Let her go.”

“The drive first.”

Luca raised it. “You wanted my empire. This is everything.”

Gabriel did not know Luca had transmitted identical copies to Maya Chen, Lauren’s editor, federal prosecutors, and every Moretti captain. The files documented three decades of racketeering, bribery, extortion, and violence.

Releasing the ledger would destroy Gabriel.

It would also destroy Luca.

Lauren’s hidden earpiece clicked. Luca’s voice reached her through the private channel he had activated before entering the port.

“When the lights fail, take Vanessa and run.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Keep them looking at me.”

“Luca, there are twenty guns.”

“I counted nineteen.”

“This isn’t funny.”

“No.”

He looked directly at her across the loading lane.

“Thank you for reminding me of the difference between peace and silence.”

“Don’t do this.”

Maya Chen’s team cut the external power.

Luca whispered one final word.

“Goodbye.”

Darkness swallowed the port.

Emergency lights ignited red. Luca threw the drive toward Gabriel, drawing every weapon away from Lauren. Vanessa had loosened one restraint inside the container and slammed her shoulder into Price as Lauren twisted free.

Gunfire erupted.

Luca crossed the open loading lane while bullets struck concrete around him. He reached Lauren and pushed her behind the container an instant before a round tore through his side.

He fell to one knee.

Lauren caught him. “You were supposed to count correctly.”

“You were supposed to run.”

Inside container 6117, Vanessa released the nearest captive and passed the loosened restraint from person to person. Lauren pulled the steel door wider, creating an escape route behind the adjoining container stack.

Gabriel saw the captives moving and raised his gun toward them.

Luca forced himself upright and stepped into the line of fire.

The second bullet struck his shoulder.

Before Gabriel could fire again, every phone on the dock began vibrating. Luca’s ledger and Gabriel’s recorded confession had reached the entire Moretti organization.

The gunmen nearest Gabriel lowered their weapons.

“You sold Alessia?” one demanded.

Gabriel looked around as seventeen years of manufactured loyalty dissolved.

Federal vehicles broke through the port barricades. Maya Chen’s agents flooded the loading lanes while an honest harbor unit blocked the departing freighter.

Price attempted to flee and was arrested beside the crane controls. The Yakuza gunmen surrendered or were overwhelmed. Gabriel ran toward the water but found Luca waiting between two containers.

Gabriel raised his pistol.

Luca recovered a weapon from the concrete. He could have killed the man who sold his sister and constructed an empire from her disappearance.

Instead, Luca lowered his gun.

“No more graves for you to hide behind.”

Federal agents forced Gabriel down and handcuffed him.

Behind them, Vanessa emerged from container 6117 while supporting a teenage girl. Ten more captives followed.

Lauren lowered Luca carefully to the ground. His breathing had become frighteningly shallow.

“Did they get out?” he asked.

May you like

“All of them.”

Only then did Luca close his eyes.
