Chapter 2 - WHAT THE CAMERA REMEMBERED

Sophia recovered first.
“That camera is fake,” she said.
My house manager, Helen, was standing in the doorway. She had supervised the installation of the system after several confidential files disappeared from my study three months earlier.
“No,” Helen said. “It records locally and backs up off-site.”
Sophia stepped away from Ethan. “Richard controls the recordings. He can change them.”
“The files are automatically sealed every sixty seconds,” Helen replied. “Not even Mr. Whitmore can alter the original.”
Claire moved between Sophia and the hallway.
“Don’t leave,” she said.
“You cannot detain me.”
“No one is touching you. But the police are already coming. Aunt Marianne called when she heard you scream.”
Sophia looked at Ethan. “Tell them what your father did.”
Ethan remained frozen in the center of the room.
“You said he grabbed you,” he answered.
“He did.”
“Then why is he pointing at a camera?”
“Because he planned this.”
I touched my cheek. My fingers came away clean, though the skin was already swelling.
“Open the security room,” I told Helen.
We gathered around the large monitor installed inside the adjoining office. Sophia refused to enter, but she remained close enough to hear.
Helen retrieved the preceding five minutes. The recording showed me placing the invoices on the table. It showed Sophia denying responsibility and checking the hallway. Then it showed her destroying her hair and tearing open her own blouse while I stood several feet away.
No one spoke as the buttons struck the floor again through the recording’s small speakers.
Ethan watched himself rush into the room and slap me.
His face changed when the video ended.
Sophia immediately said, “I panicked.”
Claire turned toward her. “About what?”
“Richard was threatening me.”
“With invoices?”
“He said he would destroy my marriage.”
The recording contained no such threat.
Ethan walked toward Sophia. She reached for him, but he stepped away before her hand touched his chest.
“Why did you say he grabbed you?”
“I was afraid.”
“You ripped your own shirt.”
“I wasn’t thinking clearly.”
“You checked the hallway first.”
Sophia began crying again, but this time the tears did not produce the same effect. Everyone in the room had seen her summon them once already.
Ethan looked toward me.
“Dad—”
“Not yet,” I said.
The words stopped him.
A police officer arrived with two additional officers and separated everyone for statements. I described the confrontation from the first invoice to the moment Ethan struck me. I also disclosed every word I had spoken to Sophia.
Sophia repeated her allegation until an officer informed her that the unedited recording had been preserved. Then she changed her account. She claimed I had threatened her before entering the room and that damaging her own clothes had been an involuntary trauma response.
The officer asked what threat I had made.
Sophia could not identify one.
As she reached for her handbag, a blue folder slipped from beneath it and opened on the floor.
Claire bent to retrieve it.
The first page was an emergency board resolution dated the following morning.
