Chapter 9 - THE FINAL STATEMENT
Sophia pleaded guilty eleven months after my birthday.
Grant had agreed to cooperate and provided records showing she directed the staged accusation. Faced with the security footage, financial documents, prepared statement, and recovered messages, her attorneys negotiated a plea covering the fraud conspiracy and false report.
She received a prison sentence followed by supervised release and was ordered to surrender her interest in the Charleston property. Grant received a reduced sentence for his cooperation but remained jointly responsible for restitution.
Ethan’s divorce was finalized quietly.
He did not celebrate. A marriage ending through betrayal was still a loss, even when leaving was necessary.
During Sophia’s sentencing, she read a statement apologizing to the Renewal Fund, the company, and Ethan. My name appeared only in the final sentence.
“I regret that Richard was struck as a result of the misunderstanding.”
The judge looked over her glasses.
“There was no misunderstanding,” she said. “You engineered a false accusation because you expected your husband to react violently.”
For the first time, Sophia had no new performance available.
After court, Ethan and I stood beside the courthouse steps.
“She still can’t say what she did to you,” he said.
“She may never be able to.”
“How do you live with that?”
“By refusing to make my peace depend on her honesty.”
Ethan looked toward the reporters waiting behind the barriers. “Can we go home?”
The word caught me off guard.
For months, my house had been the location of the slap, the recording, and the investigation. Ethan had stopped calling it home because he did not know whether he still belonged there.
I handed him my car keys.
“You drive.”
He almost smiled. “Do you trust me?”
“With the car.”
