Chapter 5 - THE VOTE SOPHIA NEEDED
The emergency board meeting began at nine the next morning.
Sophia’s attorney circulated her assault allegation fifteen minutes before the meeting. He demanded my immediate suspension and warned that failure to act would expose Whitmore Communities to reputational damage.
He did not know we possessed the blue folder.
He did not know the security recording had captured Sophia’s preparation.
I entered the boardroom with Claire and Miriam. My bruised cheek was visible. Ethan joined us without sitting in the chief executive’s chair.
Sophia appeared by video with her attorney. She wore a high-necked blouse and spoke in a trembling voice.
“I understand Richard is my husband’s father,” she said. “But no woman should be forced into silence because her attacker is powerful.”
Miriam played the unedited security recording.
The board watched Sophia check the hallway, ruin her hair, and tear off her own buttons. They saw Ethan enter and strike me. They heard me identify the camera.
When the recording ended, Sophia’s attorney requested a private recess.
The board declined.
Miriam then presented the prepared statement, the draft resolution, the seven fraudulent payments, and the preliminary ownership record connecting Sophia to Alder Shore Holdings.
One director turned toward Ethan.
“Did you know about any of this?”
“No,” he said. “But she used credentials I failed to protect. I also assaulted my father without asking what happened. I have reported both facts and recused myself from every decision.”
Sophia leaned toward her camera.
“Ethan, they’re turning you against me.”
He looked directly at her image. “You wrote what I was supposed to witness before I walked into the room.”
“I knew you would protect me.”
“You knew I would hit him.”
Sophia said nothing.
The board suspended her from every foundation and company position. It authorized a full forensic audit and appointed Claire as interim governance officer. My removal was rejected unanimously.
Then Grant Mercer, the company’s finance director, abruptly stood and announced that the meeting violated procedural rules.
Miriam asked why a finance director without voting rights had attended through a private connection.
Grant could not answer.
The audit team immediately froze his access.
