Chapter 1 - The Midnight Awakening

The dizziness in my skull felt like a lead anvil pressing against my brain cells, but the adrenaline roaring through my veins was sharper than a surgical blade. I dragged myself back up the mahogany stairs, each step requiring a monumental act of will. My muscles felt leaden, soaked in the slow-acting neurotoxin Flynn had so tenderly spoon-fed me disguised as vitamins and seasickness medicine.

They thought I was safely knocked out. They thought their midnight script was locked and loaded.

I slipped back into the master suite, locking the heavy brass deadbolt with a silent click. My reflection in the full-length vanity mirror made me gasp: pale as ash, dark circles bruised beneath my eyes, a ghost of an heiress walking the plank of her own execution ship. But beneath that fragile facade, cold fury burned like white phosphorus.

On the marble counter sat the crystal decanter of water and the remaining blister pack of pills. With hands that shook uncontrollably, I grabbed a heavy silver serving spoon and pried open the bathroom’s false-bottomed ventilation panel—a private crawlspace I had discovered weeks ago when inspecting the yacht's blueprints with my father. I spat the pill I had secretly hidden under my tongue into the vent, along with the contents of the last glass of water.

If Flynn wanted a performance, I would give him an Academy Award-winning display of a dying woman.

At 11:30 PM, a soft, deliberate knock rapped against the stateroom door.

"Evelyn, darling? Are you awake?" Flynn’s voice slinked through the wood—smooth, practiced, utterly devoid of a soul. "The air is clearing up outside. Your father messaged; he asked if you caught the moonlight. Come on, let's take a walk on the aft deck. Just you and me."

I waited five seconds, letting my breath hitch, then staggered toward the door. I twisted the lock and pulled it open, leaning heavily against the doorframe, letting my eyes glaze over artificially.

"Flynn..." I whispered, my voice cracked and weak. "My head... it's spinning so fast. I can barely stand."

His eyes flashed with a predatory triumph that he disguised instantly behind a mask of devastated concern. He wrapped his strong, deceitful arms around my waist, his touch making my skin crawl with violent revulsion.

"I know, my love, I know," he murmured into my hair, guiding me down the corridor toward the heavy glass doors leading out to the pitch-black ocean. "Just lean on me. Fresh air will cure everything. I promise you'll feel better soon."

Oh, you have no idea, Flynn, I thought, letting a tiny, razor-sharp smile curl the corner of my lips in the shadows where he couldn't see. The night has only just begun.
