Chapter 1 - The Midnight Knock

The marble foyer of Daniel’s house hummed with the sound of hollow laughter and expensive champagne bubbles popping like tiny, fragile promises. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Andrew Cole and the towering security detail, my grandfather Julian Ashworth didn't knock politely. He struck the solid mahogany door once—a sharp, authoritative rap that instantly cut through the festive music echoing from inside.
Inside, the footsteps hurried. The lock clicked, and the heavy door swung wide open.
Daniel Whitmore stood on the threshold holding a crystal flute, his tuxedo jacket discarded, his shirt collar unbuttoned, and a triumphant smirk plastered across his face. He had spent the last three hours believing he had successfully executed the ultimate corporate and marital hostile takeover. He had thrown me out, locked me away from my seven-year-old twins, and surrounded himself with his sycophantic guests and his mistress, Priya.
"Look, if this is about the noise complaint, the neighbors can—" Daniel started, his voice dripping with casual arrogance before his eyes finally focused past the dim porch lighting onto Julian’s face.
Julian didn't blink. His gray-green eyes—the exact same eyes I saw in the mirror every morning, and the same ones my daughter Maya inherited—scanned past Daniel into the brightly lit foyer where guests were holding drinks.
Then, my grandfather spoke, his voice carrying a quiet, lethal tremor that froze the entire hallway.
"Where are my granddaughter and my great-grandchildren?"
The glass slipped from Daniel’s fingers. It hit the marble floor with a sharp, explosive crash, spraying champagne and crystal shards across his polished shoes. The color drained from his face so fast he looked like a ghost under the porch light. For the first time since I had met him nine years ago, the untouchable private-equity golden boy looked utterly, helplessly terrified.
Behind Daniel, the music stopped abruptly. Heads turned from the living room. Priya Malhotra appeared around the corner in her yellow silk dress, her smile dying instantly as she saw the silver-haired stranger standing at the door with a team of lawyers and security.
Julian stepped forward, forcing Daniel to stagger backward into his own house.
"You locked my granddaughter out of her own home," Julian said, his voice dropping an octave as he raised a leather portfolio containing every financial document Andrew Cole had compiled over the last twenty-four hours. "And you made a catastrophic mistake thinking you could bury her inheritance, steal her children, and walk away clean."

Daniel swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. "I... I don't know who you are. This is private property. You're trespassing—"
"Trespassing?" Julian offered a humorless, razor-sharp smile. "Son, your entire firm, this house, the private jet you lease, and every penny of liquidity your private equity fund boasts about exist entirely at the mercy of Ashworth Capital. And as of eleven minutes ago, we just called in every single operating loan."
