Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

By Friday morning, the financial world was in a state of absolute shock.

The front page of the business section carried a blistering headline: APEX PRIVATE EQUITY COLLAPSES AMID EMERGENCY LIQUIDITY FREEZE; CEO DANIEL WHITMORE FACES FRAUD PROBE.

The fallout was swift and merciless. The board of directors at Apex had convened an emergency midnight session, immediately voting to terminate Daniel for cause after forensic accountants uncovered years of falsified expense reports, unauthorized personal loans, and hidden asset transfers—including the funding of Priya’s luxury lifestyle using corporate client retention funds.

Priya had packed her designer bags and fled the apartment she shared with Daniel’s stolen credit cards by Thursday afternoon, leaving behind a scathing text message telling him she wasn't going down for his financial incompetence.

Constance and Marcus tried to rally family support, but discovered that their country club memberships, luxury vehicle leases, and trust stipends were all tied to the exact same Ashworth credit lines that Julian had permanently severed.

I spent Thursday and Friday sitting in Andrew Cole’s conference room, signing paperwork that formally established the Isabelle Cortez Foundation—a multi-million-dollar philanthropic initiative dedicated to pediatric healthcare and single mothers, named in honor of my mother. For the first time in my life, I wasn't signing away my rights or accepting crumbs from a man who viewed me as disposable; I was drafting the charter for a future entirely my own.

On Saturday evening, I received a call from an unfamiliar number. I let it ring twice before pressing accept.

"Naomi?"

Daniel’s voice sounded hollow, broken, and desperate. He was calling from a burner phone, hiding out in a cheap motel outside city limits after his personal bank accounts were completely frozen by court order.

"I'm here, Daniel," I said calmly, sitting on the balcony of Julian’s penthouse overlooking the glittering city lights.

"Please... we can work this out," he choked out, the arrogance entirely stripped away. "The divorce... we can settle it quietly. Just talk to your grandfather. Tell him to drop the federal audits. I'll lose everything, Naomi. They're talking about criminal indictments for wire fraud and embezzlement. I'll go to prison."

I listened to him plead—the same man who had locked me outside in the cold while my children cried, the same man who had laughed as his mother humiliated me, the same man who had plotted to steal my inheritance before I even knew it existed.

"When you locked that door in my face on our anniversary," I said steadily, "you taught me what a real finality looks like. You didn't just break our marriage, Daniel. You built the exact cage you're currently sitting in."

"Naomi, please—"

"Save your breath for your defense attorney," I replied, and ended the call, blocking the number forever.
