Chapter 3 - The Siege of the Foyer

Back at the house on Elmwood Terrace, the party had officially devolved into chaos.

The guests—mostly local investors, junior associates from Daniel’s firm, and socialites who had come to gawk at the new executive power couple—were backing away toward the patio doors. Nobody wanted to be associated with a sinking ship once they saw the name emblazoned on the leather portfolio Julian carried: Ashworth Global Holdings.

"Call the police!" Constance Whitmore shrieked, marching down the stairs in her pearls, her face twisted in indignation. "Who let these thugs into my son’s house? Daniel, have them arrested immediately!"

Daniel couldn't speak. He was staring at Andrew Cole, who had just stepped past him into the foyer and opened a sleek tablet displaying real-time bank notifications.

"There's no need to call the police, Mrs. Whitmore," Andrew announced smoothly, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "Though federal marshals may arrive shortly. As of twelve minutes ago, Apex Private Equity—Mr. Whitmore’s firm—has had its primary credit lines frozen by our institutional lenders. Your corporate accounts are overdrawn by twelve million dollars due to immediate debt acceleration clauses triggered by breach of fiduciary conduct."

Priya dropped her champagne flute. It didn't shatter—it landed on a plush Persian rug, but the heavy thud signaled the end of her high-society dreams. She rushed over to Daniel, grabbing his arm. "What is he talking about, Daniel? Tell me he's lying! Your firm is worth hundreds of millions!"

"My firm..." Daniel stammered, looking around wildly as his phone began vibrating furiously in his pocket. He pulled it out. It was his managing partner, screaming through the receiver about collapsed stock value and emergency board meetings.

"Your firm was operating on leverage backed by Ashworth subsidiaries," Julian said, walking slowly into the living room as if inspecting a property he was about to demolish. He stopped in front of the sweeping staircase. "And right now, my legal team is filing emergency injunctions to audit every single asset you purchased during your marriage, including this house, your vehicles, and the offshore accounts you funded using corporate shell companies."

Leo and Maya, wakened by the noise, suddenly appeared at the top of the stairs in their pajamas, rubbing their eyes.

"Mommy?" Maya called out softly, looking down into the crowded, chaotic foyer.

My heart leapt into my throat. Before Daniel could take a step toward the stairs, Julian raised his hand, signaling his security guards to block the base of the staircase.

"Stay right there," Julian commanded Daniel, his voice freezing the younger man in his tracks.

Julian turned toward the stairs, his expression instantly softening into a warmth I had only ever imagined seeing from a grandfather. He walked up the steps, knelt beside my twins, and spoke to them in a gentle, reassuring tone. A moment later, he guided them down the stairs, carrying Maya in his arms while holding Leo’s small hand.

They walked right past Daniel, who stood paralyzed, reaching out a feeble hand toward his children before letting it drop to his side.

Julian led my children straight out the front door toward the waiting black town car where I sat watching through the tinted window. When the door opened and my twins threw their arms around my neck, sobbing tears of relief into my jacket, I finally let out the breath I had been holding all night.
