Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Marble Floor

The heavy smell of ozone, sea salt, and copper hung thick in the air of the Blackstone basement. For Rosalind Whittaker, the basement was supposed to be a temporary purgatory—a place to launder linens, avoid notice, and earn enough cash to keep her teenage brother, Marcus, off the streets. But tonight, purgatory had teeth.

Titan, the hundred-and-twenty-pound pit bull known across the East Coast underworld as a living weapon, was bleeding out across the imported Italian marble. Two rival syndicates had tried to poison him; an anonymous assailant had slipped a blade past the outer perimeter security. Titan was feral, wounded, and cornered. The last three handlers who had attempted to touch him were currently resting in hospital beds with torn tendons and shredded flesh.

Rosalind didn't run. Standing ankle-deep in a puddle of dark blood, wearing her stained gray maid’s uniform, she looked into the dog’s bloodshot, panicked eyes. She knew what fear looked like. She had lived with it every day since her veterinary license had been wrongfully revoked by a corrupt board protecting a wealthy client's negligence. She also knew what it was like to be deaf in one ear—to miss half the world’s noise and rely entirely on vibration, instinct, and a deep, aching silence.

Titan growled, a low, tectonic rumble that vibrated through the floorboards and rattled the surgical trays.

Rosalind dropped to her knees. It was a suicidal move by any sane standard. The guards stationed at the heavy reinforced doors reached for their sidearms, their faces pale. But Rosalind ignored them. She slowly raised her right hand, palm open, fingers curved downward in the universal shelter sign for calm.

Easy, big guy, she thought, locking her gaze with his. I’m not going anywhere.

Titan blinked. The wild terror in his eyes flickered, replaced by a strange, piercing clarity. He wasn't looking at an enemy. He was looking at someone who understood what it meant to be hunted.

Slowly, painfully, the massive beast dragged his mutilated frame forward and rested his heavy, scarred head directly across Rosalind’s lap. His blood soaked straight through her uniform pants, but she didn’t flinch. Instead, she began to softly hum an old, off-key lullaby her mother used to sing on nights when the rent notices were slipping under the door.

The heavy steel door at the end of the hall swung open with a loud hydraulic hiss.

Dante Castellano walked in.

The mafia boss moved with the terrifying, silent grace of a panther. His black wool coat was damp from the harbor rain, his sharp jawline set like granite. Two armed capos flanked him, their hands twitching near their holsters. Dante stopped dead in his tracks. The sight before him defied every law of nature he knew: the most vicious, unmanageable fighting dog in his syndicate—a beast that had cost fortunes and broken men—was resting peacefully against a penniless maid.

Dante’s dark eyes locked onto Rosalind. He stepped closer, his boots clicking sharply against the blood-stained marble. The guards reached for their weapons again, but Dante raised a single, gloved hand, freezing them in place.

"You touched Titan," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave, cold and heavy as an iron anchor. "You survived. Therefore... you don't leave this house."

Rosalind looked up, her jaw tightening. "I’m not a prisoner, Mr. Castellano. I’m a licensed vet tech who happens to be stuck in a room with a dying animal. If you want him to live, get me surgical thread, a curved needle, and a bottle of high-proof antiseptic. Now."

Dante stared at her for a long, agonizing heartbeat. Most people would have been shaking, begging for their lives, or crying. Rosalind just stared right back, her chin held high, defiance burning in her amber eyes.

May you like

A slow, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Dante’s lips.

"Bring her whatever she needs," Dante commanded his men without breaking eye contact with Rosalind. He knelt down beside her, ignoring the blood ruining his thousand-dollar trousers, and placed his large, calloused hand on Titan’s massive shoulder. "You saved his life, Rosalind. That makes you necessary. And in my world, what is necessary... is mine."
