Chapter 4 - Blood and Ledger Books

The grand library of the Blackstone estate smelled of old leather, expensive bourbon, and impending war.
Dante Castellano sat behind a massive mahogany desk carved from a single piece of imported mahogany. The heavy oak doors were bolted shut from the inside. Standing across from him were Julian Vance and two of Dante's most trusted enforcers.
Rosalind stood quietly in the far corner of the room, her hand resting gently on Titan’s broad, warm head. The dog’s deep, steady breathing was the only sound breaking the heavy silence.
"This is absurd, Dante," Julian laughed nervously, adjusting his silk tie. His face was slick with cold sweat, his eyes darting frantically toward the heavy double doors. "You’re going to trust the word of a common maid over your own chief financial officer? She’s a criminal sympathizer—her veterinary license was suspended before she even set foot in this house!"
Dante didn't raise his voice. He didn't yell. He slowly slid a thick leather-bound ledger across the polished wood surface toward Julian.
"Open it, Julian," Dante said smoothly.
Julian swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he reached out and flipped the cover open. Inside were precise bank routing numbers, offshore shell company names, and digital wire transfer logs—proof of millions of dollars siphoned away from the Castellano syndicate and funneled directly into accounts controlled by the rival Moretti family.
And right at the bottom of the final page was Julian’s personal digital signature, timestamped three nights ago.
"You've been bleeding my accounts for two years," Dante said, his voice dropping to a deadly, lethal whisper. "You thought I was distracted by the territorial wars in the docks. But you made one fatal mistake, Julian."
Julian’s face drained entirely of color. He looked like a man staring down the barrel of a firing squad. "What... what mistake?"
"You tried to kill my dog," Dante said, standing up slowly. The sheer physical presence of the mafia boss seemed to fill the entire room, choking the oxygen right out of the air. "Titan isn't just an animal, Julian. He’s family. And the girl you tried to frame... she belongs to this house now."
Julian panicked. With a desperate shriek, he lunged toward his right pocket, pulling out a concealed compact pistol, aiming straight for Dante's chest!
BANG!
Before Julian’s finger could even squeeze the trigger, Titan exploded across the room like a furry cannonball.
The hundred-and-twenty-pound pit bull slammed into Julian with bone-crushing force, sending the CFO crashing backward through a massive stained-glass display case. Glass shattered everywhere in a glittering cascade of color. The pistol flew from Julian’s hand, skittering across the Persian rug.
Before Julian could even scream, Titan’s heavy jaws clamped down inches from his throat, pinning him to the splintered wood floor with terrifying, absolute authority. The dog didn't bite down—he didn't have to. The sheer weight and raw, predatory dominance were enough to paralyze the traitor with unadulterated terror.
Dante walked slowly across the room, stepping over the broken glass. He looked down at Julian, who was weeping openly, begging for his life.

"Take him down to the lower vaults," Dante ordered his enforcers without a second glance. "Lock him in the dark until the federal prosecutors arrive in the morning. Let federal marshals handle his treason. We have more important matters to attend to."
The guards dragged the sobbing traitor out of the room, leaving behind only the scent of ozone, broken glass, and absolute victory.
