Chapter 1 - The Amber Bottle in the Catering Kitchen

The crystal chandeliers of the Ashford estate ballroom glittered with blinding perfection, casting a golden glow over two hundred of the city’s most elite guests. Down at the head table, the string quartet played a delicate melody that floated through the air like mist. It was supposed to be the crowning moment of my father’s life—his marriage to Celeste Vaughn, a woman who radiated an expensive, rehearsed elegance.

I sat three seats down from them, my finger tracing the rim of my champagne flute. For months, I had watched the subtle, terrifying erosion of my family. My father, a titan of industry who had built an empire from the ground up, was suddenly walking around in a haze of compliant adoration. He didn't see the way Celeste rolled her eyes when he wasn't looking, nor did he notice how his longtime advisors, lawyers, and loyal staff members were systematically fired or forced to resign.

When Maria, our loyal maid, burst through the heavy oak ballroom doors, pale and shaking, screaming that the cake was poisoned, the room froze.

Celeste had snapped instantly, her silver gown shimmering as she pointed a manicured finger at Maria and called her a thief. My father stood up, his brow furrowing in confusion. But I knew better. Twenty minutes before the reception began, I had slipped away from the cocktail hour and followed Celeste into the service wing.

From the shadow of the doorway, I had watched her open her designer clutch, pull out a small amber glass vial, and meticulously pour its contents into the pristine white frosting of the upper-tier slice designated specifically for my father.

Now, standing before the stunned crowd, I unlocked my phone. "Funny," I said, my voice cutting through the heavy silence like a razor. "Because I recorded what you put in it."

Celeste’s face lost every trace of color. The silver beaded fabric of her dress seemed to shudder against her frame as she took a half-step back, her eyes darting frantically toward my father.

"Jonathan," she hissed, her voice trembling despite her attempt at composure. "Your daughter is insane. She’s staging this—she hates me!"

My father looked down at me, his gaze torn between decades of paternal instinct and the intoxicating spell Celeste had woven over him. "Evelyn," he said tightly, "what is the meaning of this? Turn off that phone right now."

"Look at the screen first, Dad," I replied calmly, stepping away from my table and walking toward the grand dais. "And then let’s see if you still want to eat that cake."
