Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Web of Deceit

Detective Miller didn't wait for the murmurs of the crowd to die down. He walked straight up to the head table, laying out a thick bundle of financial documents directly over the wedding planner's seating charts.

"Mr. Ashford," Detective Miller said, addressing my father respectfully. "For the past six months, your fiancée has been systematically draining your secondary accounts, redirecting foundation grants into offshore accounts in the Bahamas, and forging your signature on power-of-attorney amendments. If you had eaten that cake tonight, the autopsy would have recorded a fatal heart attack caused by acute cardiac glycoside poisoning—leaving Mrs. Vaughn as the sole executrix and primary beneficiary of your multi-billion-dollar estate."

My father looked like he had been physically struck. He turned his head slowly toward Celeste, who had stopped thrashing and was now glaring at the floor with dead, venomous eyes.

"Is this true?" my father whispered, his voice cracking with a pain that was far deeper than any physical injury.

"You were a lonely old fool, Jonathan," Celeste spat out, abandoning all pretense of sweetness. Her voice echoed sharply through the silent ballroom. "You practically begged for someone to flatter you, to tell you you were still young and powerful. You deserved to be cleaned out."

My father flinched as if he had been slapped. He slowly lowered himself back into his chair, covering his face with his trembling hands. The invincible titan of industry looked broken, stripped of his pride by his own blinding vanity.

I stepped forward, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder. "You're not the first brilliant man to be fooled by a professional predator, Dad," I said softly. "And you won't be the last. But you have a family that protects you, even when you refuse to protect yourself."

Maria, the maid who had saved the day, stood near the doorway wringing her hands nervously. I caught her eye, smiled warmly, and gave her a reassuring nod.

"Take her away, Detective," I instructed, turning back to Miller. "And make sure her laptop and phone from the bridal suite are secured. Every single offshore routing number and accomplice is cataloged in her digital storage."

As the officers hauled Celeste out of the ballroom in her glittering silver gown, the heavy doors slammed shut behind her, sealing her fate. The wedding of the year had instantly transformed into a crime scene, but the dark cloud that had hung over our household for months had finally been blown away.
