Chapter 3 - The Sanctuary of Steel Manor

The heavy iron gates of Steel Manor swung open automatically, their ornate wrought-iron scrolls parting to welcome a sleek convoy of black armored SUVs into the sprawling, private estate nestled high in the hills overlooking the city. Inside the middle vehicle, Owen and Lily sat pressed against the plush leather backseat, their wide blue eyes taking in the towering stone facade of the mansion, the manicured gardens, and the glowing fountains that looked more like a royal palace than a home.

For children who had spent the last three years walking on eggshells in a cold, sterile apartment where laughter was forbidden and crying was punished, the sheer scale of the estate was overwhelming.

When the SUV came to a smooth stop, Marco opened the door from the outside, stepping back with an exaggerated, gentle bow that brought a tiny, hesitant flicker of a smile to Lily’s face.

""Welcome to your new fortress, kids,"" Marco said warmly, offering his hand.

Owen instinctively clutched his battered teddy bear tighter and stepped in front of his sister, his little body tense with defensive pride. ""Are we going to be locked in a room again?"" he asked, his voice trembling despite his brave posture.

Ryker, who had stepped out of the front passenger seat, froze. He walked over, knelt down on one knee right in front of the little boy, and looked him straight in the eye.

""Nobody is ever locking you in a room again,"" Ryker said, his voice ringing with absolute, unshakeable sincerity. ""In this house, you don't have to hide, you don't have to be quiet, and nobody will ever make you feel like you are in the way. Do you understand me?""

Lily slowly stepped out from behind her brother, her small hand reaching out tentatively to touch the lapel of Ryker’s expensive suit jacket. ""Is this our home now?"" she whispered.

""It is,"" Ryker replied softly, gently covering her tiny hand with his large, warm palm. ""And I promise you, no one will ever take it away.""

Stepping inside the grand foyer, the twins were greeted by Mrs. Higgins, the head housekeeper, a kind-faced older woman with silver hair tied back in a neat bun and an apron that smelled perpetually of freshly baked vanilla cookies. When Mrs. Higgins saw the two pale, fragile children standing beside the terrifying boss of the underworld, her hand flew to her mouth, and her maternal instincts flared instantly.

""Oh, my sweet, poor angels,"" Mrs. Higgins gasped, rushing forward and dropping immediately to her knees. ""Look at you both. You must be freezing and starved.""

Without asking permission, Mrs. Higgins scooped Lily up into her arms while Marco gently lifted Owen onto his shoulders, earning a sudden, genuine giggle from the little boy.

""Mrs. Higgins,"" Ryker instructed as they walked toward the grand family dining room, where a warm fire roared in the marble fireplace. ""Have the medical team on standby to run a full pediatric checkup. And I want the east wing guest suites completely remodeled into a children's paradise by tonight. Order toys, clothes, books—everything a five-year-old could possibly want. Spare no expense.""

""Consider it done, Mr. Steel,"" Mrs. Higgins beamed, already carrying Lily toward the kitchen for hot cocoa and warm pastries. ""And don't you worry about a thing. These little ones are in safe hands now.""

Later that evening, after a warm bath, new clothes that actually fit, and a hearty dinner they barely had the energy to finish, the twins were tucked into a massive, custom-built double bed under a mountain of soft blankets in the newly decorated east wing.

Ryker stood quietly in the doorway, watching their steady breathing as they finally fell into a deep, peaceful sleep—free from fear, free from abandonment.

Marco walked up beside him, handing him a thick legal dossier. ""Boss, we've liquidated all of Victoria Vance’s assets. Her accounts are wiped clean, her passport is flagged, and the district attorney has filed felony charges of child abandonment and embezzlement. She’s facing twenty years.""

Ryker took the file, closing it slowly without opening it. His eyes remained fixed on the two sleeping children.

""Good,"" Ryker said quietly. Then, for the first time in over fifteen years, the cold, ruthless billionaire felt a strange, unfamiliar warmth spreading through his chest—a feeling of purpose that no corporate takeover or billion-dollar deal could ever match.
