Chapter 4 - The Shadow of Danger and the Unbreakable Vow

Three months passed inside Steel Manor, transforming the cold, intimidating fortress into a vibrant home filled with the sound of running footsteps, echoing laughter, and the bright, infectious chatter of two five-year-olds.
Ryker Steel, a man who had never so much as held a toy in his adult life, found himself reading bedtime stories every single night, letting Owen style his hair into ridiculous spikes during weekend breakfast, and canceling multi-million-dollar board meetings just to watch Lily build her first Lego castle. The transformation in the twins was miraculous; the hollow look in their blue eyes had been replaced by a bright, fearless curiosity about the world.
However, in the underworld, power always attracted envy, and enemies never truly slept.
It was a crisp Tuesday afternoon when the peace of Steel Manor was abruptly shattered. Ryker was in his underground security bunker reviewing encrypted surveillance feeds when his comm-device buzzed violently.
""Boss! We have a breach at the perimeter gate!"" Marco’s voice barked through the speaker, laced with urgent adrenaline. ""An armed team in unmarked tactical gear—looks like mercenaries hired by the remnants of the cartel we dismantled last year. They bypassed the outer sensors!""
Ryker’s blood ran cold, not with fear, but with a blind, murderous rage. They weren't after his money. They knew about the twins. They knew the children were his soft spot.
""Where are the kids?!"" Ryker demanded, lunging toward the armory wall, where his customized sidearm and tactical vest hung waiting.
""They’re in the east wing art room with Mrs. Higgins!"" Marco yelled. ""The extraction team is moving in from the north courtyard—""
""Hold your position,"" Ryker commanded, his voice dropping into the terrifying, razor-sharp tone of a general commanding an army. ""Do not let them reach that wing. If so much as a single hair on their heads is touched, I want every single one of those bastards buried in unmarked graves before sunset.""
Ryker didn't wait for confirmation. He grabbed a rifle from the rack, checked the chamber with a practiced click, and sprinted up the concrete stairs toward the main house.
Inside the east wing, Mrs. Higgins had barricaded the heavy oak doors of the art room with a massive mahogany bookshelf, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she clutched Owen and Lily tightly to her chest beneath a sturdy mahogany craft table.
""Mrs. Higgins, don't let go of me,"" Lily sobbed, her little fingers tangled in the housekeeper’s apron.
""I won't, sweetheart. I'm right here,"" Mrs. Higgins whispered fiercely, her eyes fixed on the door as the sound of splintering wood echoed from the hallway.
Bang!
The door burst inward as a heavily armed mercenary kicked it off its hinges, raising a silenced assault rifle and scanning the room through a tactical night-vision visor. He spotted the table immediately and took a sharp step forward, raising his weapon.
""Got 'em,"" the mercenary muttered into his radio mic.
Before he could pull the trigger, a dark shadow dropped silently from the ceiling rafters directly behind him.
A heavy steel combat knife flashed once in the dim light. Before the intruder could turn around, Ryker’s arm wrapped around his neck in a brutal, crushing chokehold, snapping the mercenary’s spine with a sickening crunch before the man even hit the floor.
Two more intruders rushed through the ruined doorway, their rifles swinging toward Ryker.
Ryker didn't hesitate. He raised his assault rifle and unleashed a controlled, devastating burst of suppressive fire. The first mercenary took two rounds to the chest and crashed backward through the shattered doorframe. The second panicked, trying to aim, but Ryker closed the distance in a fraction of a second, driving the butt of his rifle squarely into the man's jaw, sending him flying across the room into a display cabinet of ceramic pottery.
Silence fell over the room once more, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace and the heavy, controlled breathing of Ryker Steel.
He dropped his rifle to his side, his knuckles bloodied, his chest rising and falling beneath his torn tactical shirt. He slowly turned toward the craft table.
Owen and Lily peeked out from beneath the edge of the wood. When Lily saw Ryker standing there unharmed among the wreckage, she scrambled out from under the table and ran across the room as fast as her little legs could carry her, crashing directly into Ryker’s knees.
Ryker dropped his weapon instantly, falling to his knees and wrapping his strong arms around both children, pulling them tightly against his chest as if he could shield them from the entire cruel world.
""Are you okay?"" Ryker asked, his voice shaking for the first time in his life.
May you like
""We knew you'd come,"" Owen whispered fiercely, burying his face in Ryker’s shoulder, his little arms wrapped tight around Ryker’s neck. ""We knew nobody could ever beat you.""
Ryker closed his eyes, pressing his forehead against his son’s soft blond curls. At that moment, the billionaire crime lord made a silent vow to the universe: Let anyone try to take them. I will burn down empires before I ever let anyone hurt my children again.
