Chapter 5 - A New Dawn and Forever Family

The morning sun washed over Steel Manor in a golden, brilliant glow, chasing away the dark shadows of the previous night’s violence as if it had all been a bad dream. Outside on the sprawling emerald lawn, the sound of children's laughter rang out like sweet music.

Owen was kicking a soccer ball across the grass toward Marco, who was playing goalie with exaggerated, comedic dives that sent the little boy into fits of uncontrollable giggles. A few feet away, Lily sat on a picnic blanket with Mrs. Higgins, carefully frosting pink cupcakes with an intense, artistic concentration that would have made a pastry chef proud.

Standing on the second-floor balcony overlooking the garden, Ryker Steel leaned against the wrought-iron railing with a steaming cup of black coffee in his hand. He wore a simple black t-shirt and jeans, looking less like a feared underworld king and more like a proud, protective father watching over his world.

Marco walked up behind him, carrying a thick legal folder stamped with bright red seals from the federal courts.

""All clean, Boss,"" Marco reported with a rare, genuine smile. ""The remaining mercenary cell has been completely neutralized across three states. International authorities have officially locked Victoria Vance away in a maximum-security federal penitentiary with no chance of parole for twenty years. And..."" Marco paused, tapping the folder. ""The adoption papers went through expedited judicial review this morning. The judges didn't even blink when your name was attached.""

Ryker looked down at the folder. Inside those pages were the final legal decrees making it official: Owen and Lily weren't just wards under his protection. They were legally, undeniably, forever his children. Ryker Steel.

""Good,"" Ryker said softly, taking a sip of his coffee. ""Call the press office. I want a formal public statement issued by noon.""

Marco raised an eyebrow. ""A public statement, Boss? You usually avoid the spotlight like the plague. What do you want the world to know?""

Ryker watched as Lily looked up from her cupcakes, spotted him standing on the balcony, and waved frantically with both hands, a huge, radiant smile lighting up her face. Owen immediately joined in, kicking the soccer ball toward the patio and waving up as well, shouting, ""Dad! Come down and play!""

Ryker smiled—a real, deep, unrestricted smile that softened the hard lines of his face and made him look decades younger. He raised his coffee cup in a silent salute to his children.

""Let the whole world know,"" Ryker told Marco, turning away from the balcony to head down stairs and join his family in the sun, ""that Ryker Steel is officially off the market. Because from now on, my only job is being a dad."""
