Chapter 2 - The Ledger of Bruises

The moment Ethan stepped out of the room to page the on-duty officer, the fragile peace of the trauma bay shattered. Grant didn't hesitate. He took two long, predatory strides toward the gurney. The mask of the doting husband was completely gone now, replaced by the terrifying, cold-eyed monster Emily had lived with for three agonizing years. He grabbed her chin, his thumb digging brutally into the fresh swelling on her jaw, forcing her to look up at him.
"You open your mouth to that bleeding-heart doctor, and I swear to God, Emily, you won't survive the night," he hissed. His breath was hot, smelling of wintergreen mints and the expensive, single-malt bourbon he had been sipping while jazz played softly through their empty, cavernous house earlier that evening. "I built you. I pulled you out of that public servant dirt and gave you a life. I can erase you just as easily."
Emily stared back at him. For three years, this look, this exact tone of voice, would have made her shrink into herself. It would have made her weep, apologize, and beg for forgiveness for whatever imaginary slight had triggered his wrath. She had spent a thousand days learning how to survive him. She had learned which floorboards warned her he was coming down the hallway. She had learned how to cry without making a single sound, so as not to provoke him further.
But tonight, the physical pain felt strangely distant. It was drowned out by a sudden, brilliant surge of adrenaline. Beneath her blank, terrified expression, Emily’s mind was operating with the cold, mathematical precision of the forensic accountant she used to be.
Before Grant had forced her to resign under the guise of wanting a "traditional wife," Emily had spent her days chasing criminals through complex, hidden spreadsheets for the New York State Attorney General. She knew that people like Grant, men who worshipped their own egos, always left a trail. They couldn't help it. Their arrogance demanded that they keep records of their brilliance, their control, and their power.
"I understand, Grant," Emily whispered, her voice barely a thread. She let her eyes flutter shut, feigning the complete submission he always demanded.
Grant smirked, a quiet, self-satisfied chuckle escaping his throat. He pulled his hand back, patronizingly patting her cheek before straightening his cuffs. "Good girl. Remember who has the power here. I’ll go talk to the administrator. We’ll have this little doctor reassigned by morning."
He turned his back to watch the glass door of the trauma room, waiting for his chance to slip out. But as he turned, Emily’s hand crept slowly, agonizingly beneath the hospital gown. Taped flat against her upper thigh, hidden beneath the thick gauze of an old dressing she had refused to let the triage nurse touch, was a razor-thin, encrypted flash drive.

Grant thought he was the only one who knew how to play games. He believed the password protecting his secure home server was an unbreakable enigma. He had no idea that Emily had spent months watching him type it, analyzing the subtle movements of his fingers, calculating the keystrokes. She knew his banking apps. She knew his encrypted folders. She knew the secret offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.
Most importantly, she had discovered his Exhibits folder. Grant loved reliving his power so much that he had secretly recorded several of his "lessons" on a hidden camera in their bedroom, storing them like trophies. He believed she was too broken, too stupid, to ever find them. He was wrong. Every single bruise he had ever given her had been an equation she was solving. And tonight, she finally had the final variable.
