Chapter 4 - The Collapse of an Empire

Grant froze. The air left his lungs in a sharp, sudden gasp, and for the first time in his life, he looked genuinely small. The color drained from his face, leaving him a sickly, ghostly pale. He stared at the tiny piece of plastic in Emily's hand as if it were a loaded weapon.

"Where... where did you get that?" Grant stammered, his voice losing its rich baritone, cracking under the sudden pressure of sheer terror. "That’s private company property. That’s corporate espionage. You stole that!"

"I didn't have to steal it, Grant. You left the door wide open because you thought I was too stupid to understand what I was looking at," Emily said, a cold, triumphant smile breaking through her pain. "You forgot that before I was your trophy, I spent five years exposing people exactly like you for the state of New York. I know how to read a double-entry ledger. I know how to track shell companies in Panama and Delaware. And I know exactly how much money you’ve been laundering through the Mercer Hope Foundation to pay off the city zoning commissioners."

Martinez took the flash drive from Emily’s hand, his expression deadpan. He looked at the drive, then at Grant, whose eyes were darting around the room like a trapped animal.

"Officer, that drive contains the exact routing numbers, transaction histories, and encrypted video files of the assaults," Emily continued, her voice steady and relentless. "The videos are timestamped. They match the dates of my previous hospital visits—the ones Grant forced me to claim were accidents. It’s all there. Every single crime he has committed for the last thirty-six months."

"This is a setup!" Grant screamed, his voice reaching a desperate, hysterical pitch as Martinez grabbed his arm and spun him around, forcing his hands behind his back. "Do you have any idea what this will do to the market? I am the face of this city's redevelopment! Thousands of jobs rely on my company! You can't do this to me!"

"I’m not doing anything to you, Grant," Emily said softly, watching as the metal handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists with a heavy, definitive snap. "You wrote the numbers. I just balanced the ledger."

"You're dead, Emily!" Grant roared, struggling against Martinez’s grip as the officer began to march him out of the room. "Do you hear me? My lawyers will have me out before the sun comes up! You'll have nothing! I'll strip you of every dime!"

"Actually, Mr. Mercer," Ethan intervened, opening the door wider to reveal two additional security guards and a pair of uniformed police officers waiting in the hallway. "The District Attorney’s office has already been notified of the medical evidence. Given the flight risk and the severity of the charges on that drive, I highly doubt you’ll be seeing the outside of a cell anytime soon. Have a nice night."
