Chapter 3 - The Forensic Mind

The door to the trauma room slid open, and Ethan returned. He wasn't alone. Standing beside him was Officer Martinez, a veteran beat cop whose weathered face and tired eyes hardened the moment he took in the state of Emily's swollen face.

"Mr. Mercer," Martinez said, keeping his posture relaxed but his hand resting casually near his utility belt. "We need you to step out into the waiting area. I need to take your wife's statement regarding the incident."

Grant's demeanor shifted instantly. He threw his hands up in a gesture of mild, amused frustration. "Officer, this is ridiculous. My wife is hysterical. She’s concussed, she’s heavily medicated, and she doesn't know what she’s saying. She fell in the shower. I brought her here to get her help, and now I’m being treated like a criminal? Emily, sweetie, tell the officer what happened. Tell him about the slippery tile."

The silence in the room was suffocating. The hum of the fluorescent lights seemed to grow louder. Martinez looked at Emily, his notebook open, his pen hovering. Ethan stood at the foot of the bed, his arms crossed, his steady, supportive gaze locked onto Emily. He didn't pressure her; he simply stood there like a shield, letting her know she was safe.

Emily looked at her husband. She looked at the expensive suit, the arrogant grin, the absolute certainty in his eyes that he was going to walk out of this hospital untouched, just as he always did. She felt the heavy, metallic weight of the flash drive gripped tightly in her palm beneath the blanket.

"My husband didn't rescue me, Officer," Emily said. Her voice was quiet at first, but as she spoke, the tremor vanished, replaced by a cold, resonant clarity that surprised even herself. "He did this to me. He dragged me across the bathroom floor by my hair. He kicked me while I was down. And he has been doing it for three years."

"You lying little bitch!" Grant exploded, taking a violent step toward the bed.

But Martinez was faster. The veteran cop moved with surprising speed, placing his sturdy frame directly in Grant's path, his hand firmly gripping his baton. "Back up, sir! Back up right now! Do not approach the patient!"

"She’s mentally unstable!" Grant yelled, his face turning an ugly, mottled red as his carefully constructed public persona crumbled in real-time. "She’s a failed accountant who couldn't handle the pressure of our lifestyle! She’s trying to extort me! She’s trying to ruin my reputation!"

"I didn't fail, Grant," Emily said, slowly pulling her hand out from beneath the blanket. She held up the tiny silver flash drive, letting it glint under the sterile hospital lights. "I just changed my client list. Officer, this drive doesn't just contain the medical records of my abuse. It contains three years of complete financial ledgers for Mercer Development."
