Chapter 2

The alarm sealed the external gates and interrupted a summit two years in the making. Five family leaders were escorted into separate rooms while Kane guards searched the estate for an intruder no one could yet describe.

Claire cared about none of them. She crossed the forbidden threshold despite Dominic’s warning and reached for Nora.

Adrian did not resist. He transferred the sleeping child into her mother’s arms with a care that seemed impossible from a man whose name frightened judges.

“Where did she get the rabbit?” he asked.

Claire held Nora tightly. “My husband gave it to me before she was born.”

“His name.”

“Michael Bennett.”

Dominic’s attention sharpened. Michael had worked as an electrical mechanic in the Kane fleet garage. Three days after Sofia and Emilia Kane died, he was killed in a fire investigators blamed on faulty wiring.

Claire had been seven months pregnant.

Adrian turned the rabbit’s ear outward. Beneath the worn fur, Emilia’s initials remained visible. Sofia had sewn them herself after Emilia refused to let anyone replace the damaged toy.

“Michael brought it home the night after the crash,” Claire said. “He told me to keep it safe for our baby. He died before explaining where it came from.”

Adrian ordered everyone except Claire and Dominic from the room. Claire refused to surrender the rabbit until Nora woke and she could explain why its seam needed to be opened.

“She has slept with it every night of her life.”

“It may contain evidence connected to two murders.”

“And she is still a child, not an evidence bag.”

Dominic waited for Adrian’s anger. Instead, Adrian nodded.

When Nora woke, Claire told her the rabbit had once belonged to another little girl and might contain something important. Nora reluctantly allowed Dominic to open the repaired seam while she held Claire’s hand.

Inside were a microSD card wrapped in waxed paper and a narrow steel key stamped M-17.

Dominic created forensic copies of the card before opening its files. The first video came from a hidden camera inside the Kane fleet garage. Its timestamp was twenty-four hours before the crash.

Julian Voss, Adrian’s consigliere and most trusted adviser, entered after midnight with a mechanic employed by the Bellini family. They carried a sealed automotive control unit identical to the one installed in Adrian’s armored sedan.

The video did not show them sabotaging the vehicle. It showed enough to destroy their explanation for being there.

The final file contained Michael’s voice.

“If something happens to the Kane car, check bay locker M-17. The controller they removed is inside. Julian knows I saw him. Claire, if you ever hear this, I’m sorry I brought danger home.”

Claire pressed both hands over her mouth.

For three years, she believed Michael died because he ignored a damaged wire. Now she heard the fear he had hidden to protect her.

Adrian watched the recording twice. The car had been intended for him. Sofia took it unexpectedly when Emilia became ill at school. The brakes failed on a mountain road before the driver could reach the hospital.

Julian spent the next three years insisting the Bellinis caused the crash while presenting himself as Adrian’s most loyal ally. The conflict enriched him through weapons, security, and territory abandoned by weaker families.

“Julian is downstairs,” Dominic said.

Adrian’s face emptied of everything except purpose.

Claire stepped between him and the door. “If you confront him now, he’ll know what we found before anyone can authenticate it.”

“He murdered my family.”

“And Michael died preserving proof. Don’t waste it because anger feels faster.”

No one in the Kane estate spoke to Adrian that way. Dominic seemed to stop breathing.

Adrian looked at Nora, who was holding the opened rabbit against her chest.

“Make three copies,” he told Dominic. “One goes to my attorney. One goes to Claire. One leaves the estate with someone Julian cannot reach.”

Claire chose the third recipient: Detective Lena Ortiz, the investigator who handled Michael’s death and had never believed the garage fire was accidental. Dominic contacted her through Adrian’s attorney and arranged a formal evidence transfer.

Security then reviewed access activity after Claire and Nora entered the estate. Someone using Julian’s credentials had opened the service-gate camera feed six times.

He had watched Nora arrive carrying Emilia’s rabbit.

Julian did not yet know what Michael hid inside it.

But he knew the evidence he had spent three years searching for was now sleeping in the arms of a three-year-old child.
