Chapter 4

The summit reconvened beneath chandeliers that made the Kane dining hall look almost ceremonial. Armed guards stood along the walls, but Adrian had ordered their weapons lowered unless Dominic gave a direct command.
Claire attended because Michael’s evidence belonged to her as much as it belonged to Adrian. Nora remained in the secured nursery with Detective Ortiz and two officers Claire had met herself.
Julian sat at Adrian’s right hand, the position he had occupied for fifteen years.
Marco Bellini sat opposite him.
Adrian began without accusation. He asked Julian to recount the investigation into Sofia and Emilia’s crash. Julian repeated the story he had told for three years: Bellini mechanics tampered with the car, Michael Bennett installed the defective component, and the garage fire prevented further questioning.
“Michael had no motive,” Claire said.
Julian looked at her as though staff had spoken during prayer. “Fear and money are motives enough.”
Dominic placed the stuffed rabbit on the table.
Julian’s gaze dropped to its repaired ear.
That reaction was small, but everyone saw it.
The garage footage played on the wall screen. Julian watched himself enter beside Bellini’s mechanic. He claimed they were discussing unauthorized repairs.
The examiner’s report identified the preserved control unit from locker M-17. Detective Ortiz presented the forged work order and preliminary findings linking the garage fire to an accelerant placed near Michael’s workbench.
Julian continued denying everything.
Then Michael’s final recording filled the room.
“Julian knows I saw him.”
Marco Bellini rose. His guards moved with him, but Kane security closed the doors.
Julian turned toward Adrian. “You know what the war made possible. Every territory you control now exists because your enemies believed you would burn the city for Sofia.”
Adrian’s voice remained low. “Did you alter the car?”
“It was never supposed to carry them.”
The room went silent.
Julian realized too late what he had admitted.
“It was meant for you,” he said, abandoning denial. “Bellini wanted you gone. I wanted a leader strong enough to win what followed.”
“You killed a child to improve my reputation.”
“I did not know Sofia would take the car.”
Julian reached beneath his jacket.
Dominic struck his wrist aside before he could clear the weapon. Guards forced him against the table while Bellini shouted orders no one obeyed.
Adrian drew his own gun.
Claire saw the moment grief replaced judgment. She stepped into his line of sight, not between the weapon and Julian but close enough that Adrian had to see her.
“Nora heard you promise she was safe.”
Julian laughed against the table. “You’re taking orders from a servant now?”
Adrian looked at the rabbit, then at the officers entering through the side doors with warrants secured from the evidence Claire had transferred.
Slowly, he lowered the gun.
“No,” he said. “I’m keeping my word.”
Julian Voss and Marco Bellini were arrested for conspiracy connected to the Kane crash, Michael’s death, evidence destruction, and the attack on Nora’s suite. The intercepted call and locker ambush tied the Bellini organization directly to the attempted cleanup.
The arrests shattered the alliance system Adrian had spent years building. Two families withdrew from Kane territory. Several businesses closed within days, and investigators began examining the financial machinery supporting the conflict.
Adrian could have protected his empire by limiting cooperation.
Instead, he gave prosecutors the records necessary to dismantle Julian’s security network and Bellini’s enforcement operation. The decision exposed parts of his own organization to scrutiny and cost him companies, territory, and men who believed restraint was weakness.
Claire did not praise him for it.
Choosing not to kill Julian was not redemption. It was the first accountable decision Adrian made after years of benefiting from fear.
At sunrise, Claire returned to Nora. The child was awake, holding Button beneath one arm while Snow slept at her feet.
“Did the scary men go away?” Nora asked.
“Some of them did.”
“Is Mr. Kane still sad?”
Claire looked toward the open door. Adrian stood outside, unwilling to enter without permission.
“Yes,” she said. “But now he knows why.”
May you like
Nora considered that, then held out one small hand.
Adrian crossed the threshold only after Claire nodded.
