Chapter 3
Claire and Nora were moved to a secure guest suite with an interior lock controlled only from inside. Adrian assigned Dominic personally to their protection.
Claire refused Adrian’s first proposal to send them away in an armored convoy.
“If Julian watched us arrive, he’ll watch us leave.”
“He cannot reach the vehicle.”
“That is what Sofia believed.”
The sentence hurt him, but it changed the plan.
Detective Ortiz arrived through the service entrance with a digital-evidence technician and a sealed transfer case. She authenticated receipt of the copied card and reopened Michael’s death investigation. The key marked M-17 corresponded to a locker in the abandoned Kane fleet garage, which had remained closed since the fire.
Opening it immediately risked alerting whoever monitored the property. Ortiz arranged surveillance first.
Adrian allowed a false message to circulate among the household command staff: the rabbit contained only an old key, and investigators had not identified what it opened.
Four hours later, Julian made an encrypted call from the guest wing. He instructed a Bellini lieutenant to clear locker M-17 before sunrise.
The surveillance team arrested the man as he entered the garage. A second vehicle fled, firing toward the officers and killing one Kane security driver stationed nearby before police disabled it farther down the road.
By midnight, the peace treaty was dead, one loyal man had been killed, and the five families inside the estate understood that someone had begun a war beneath the appearance of negotiation.
Police opened locker M-17 with Claire present. Inside were the sedan’s original control unit, a forged maintenance order bearing Michael’s name, and a notebook filled with his shorthand.
Claire recognized the symbols from years of watching him label household repairs. One entry identified a replacement unit by serial number. Another recorded Julian’s midnight visit. The final page contained two words underlined three times:
NOT ACCIDENT.
An independent automotive examiner confirmed that the preserved unit was functional. The replacement recovered after the fatal crash had been altered to fail after sustained downhill braking.
The forged work order had made Michael appear responsible for installing it.
While Claire was at the garage, a guard she did not recognize arrived at Nora’s suite and claimed Dominic had ordered an evacuation. The man knew Claire’s name, Nora’s age, and the location of the service staircase.
He did not know Nora called the stuffed rabbit Button.
“Bring the rabbit too,” he said. “Mr. Kane wants the evidence moved.”
Claire closed the door instead.
The guard reached for his weapon and attempted to override the lock. Claire triggered the silent alarm Dominic had shown her that afternoon, pushed a dresser against the inner door, and carried Nora into the reinforced bathroom.
The first gunshot struck the corridor wall.
Dominic reached the suite with two loyal guards. The intruder ignored an order to surrender and was killed when he raised his weapon toward the bedroom.
Nora heard the shot through two closed doors.
Claire held her on the bathroom floor and sang the preschool song Nora usually found embarrassing. Her own voice shook so violently she could barely form the words.
Adrian arrived after Dominic cleared the room. He stopped outside the bathroom rather than forcing his way inside.
“Claire?”
“Is it safe?”
“Yes.”
She opened the door but did not hand Nora to him.
“You promised her.”
His gaze moved to the child’s face. “I know.”
“Protection is not men with guns appearing after someone reaches the hallway. Find the people giving the orders.”
The dead intruder’s phone contained a message routed through Julian’s private security channel. The order did not name Nora. It referred to “the package from the servants’ wing.”
Julian could no longer pretend he had only watched a camera out of curiosity.
Adrian summoned the five family leaders back to the main hall and announced that the summit would continue before dawn.

Dominic understood the decision. Adrian was not restoring the treaty.
He was gathering every person connected to the conspiracy into one room before Julian learned how much evidence had survived.
