Chapter 2 - The Exposure of the Golden Cage

A heavy murmur rippled through the crowd of 150 guests. Several prominent businessmen near the front row—including Daniel’s senior partners—began exchanging uneasy glances. Daniel himself was nowhere to be seen in the immediate vicinity, having stepped outside to take an urgent phone call, but his closest associates were listening intently.

Chloe realized the danger of her social standing evaporating in real-time. Desperation clawed at her voice as she tried to salvage her reputation.

“Jessi, sweetheart, please... listen to reason,” Chloe pleaded, her tone shifting instantly from defensive fury to a pathetic, weeping whine. She tried to reach out and grab the hem of Jessi's wedding dress, but Jessi stepped smoothly out of reach. “You’re destroying my life! Daniel... Daniel is a very powerful man. If his friends think I abandoned my children like monsters, he will cut me off! He’ll throw me out on the street with nothing, just like you claim I was before!”

At that exact moment, a calm, deep voice echoed from the side entrance of the ballroom.

“Don't worry, Chloe. You won’t have to wait for Daniel to throw you out. I already took care of it.”

Everyone turned their heads. Walking down the center aisle was our second daughter, Maya, who was twenty-three and a brilliant forensic accountant. In her hands, she carried a thick leather binder stamped with legal seals. Behind her walked a middle-aged, impeccably dressed man with a stern expression—none other than Daniel’s primary corporate attorney, Arthur Vance.

Chloe froze, her jaw dropping completely. “Arthur? What... what are you doing here? Why are you with my daughter?”

Arthur adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, stepping up to the microphone beside Jessi. He didn't look at Chloe with anger; he looked at her with professional indifference.

“Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur spoke in a clear, authoritative baritone. “My name is Arthur Vance. For the past twenty years, I have served as chief legal counsel for Daniel’s corporate empire. Over the last month, Miss Maya—who is an exceptionally talented financial investigator—approached my office with a series of documents regarding corporate embezzlement, offshore accounts, and fraudulent asset transfers.”

Gasps erupted through the crowd. Daniel’s business associates stood up from their seats, looking alarmed.

Maya stepped forward, opening the leather binder. She didn't look at her mother with hatred; her expression was completely cool and clinical.

“For fifteen years, Mom, you lived the high life,” Maya said into her own microphone, her voice ringing clear. “You wore designer gowns, drove luxury sports cars, and bragged about how rich your new life was. But do you know whose money actually paid for all of that? It wasn’t just Daniel’s salary. Two months ago, we discovered that Daniel’s company had been systematically embezzling pension funds from hundreds of hardworking logistics employees—ironically, the exact same logistics firm where Dad worked double shifts for a decade to raise us.”

The color drained entirely from Chloe’s face. She staggered backward once more, her legs trembling beneath her sequined dress.

“And worse,” Maya continued relentlessly, turning a page in the binder, “Daniel registered all those stolen assets—the penthouse, the offshore bank accounts, the luxury cars—under your name, Chloe. Why? Because if federal investigators ever came knocking for corporate fraud, he planned to use you as his legal shield and scapegoat. You weren't his queen, Mom. You were his fall guy.”
