Chapter 4 - The Truth Behind the Sacrifice

With Daniel taken away and the federal agents clearing the room of panicked guests, only our family, a few close friends, and a weeping Chloe remained in the grand ballroom.

Chloe was sitting crumpled on the floor near the overturned floral pillar, looking utterly pathetic. All her designer clothes, expensive jewelry, and haughty arrogance had been stripped away by the harsh light of reality. She looked up at me with tear-filled, broken eyes.

“Luca...” she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. “Please... help me. They’re going to take everything. I don't have any money of my own. I don't have a home. Please... tell them I’m your wife. Tell them to help me.”

I walked slowly down the steps from the head table. For fifteen years, I had dreamed of this moment—dreamed of yelling at her, cursing her out, and making her feel a fraction of the pain she had inflicted on me and our little girls. But as I looked down at her, I felt no anger at all. Only profound, heavy pity.

I stopped a few feet away and looked down at her calmly.

“Chloe,” I said quietly, my voice steady and firm. “When you walked out that door fifteen years ago, you told me I couldn't give you the life you deserved. You were right. I couldn't give you stolen money, luxury penthouses bought with fraudulent blood, or a life built on betrayal.”

I gestured toward our six daughters, who were standing together near the altar—Jessi in her white wedding gown, Maya, CJ, and our three younger girls, all holding hands, standing tall, proud, and united.

“You thought you abandoned six little girls to a life of poverty and misery,” I continued, my voice softening as I looked at my daughters with immense pride. “You thought they would grow up bitter, weak, and broken. But look at them now, Chloe. They are fierce, brilliant, successful, and fiercely loyal. They didn't need your money. They didn't need your love. Because we built something far more valuable together: a real family.”

Our youngest daughter, twelve-year-old Lily, stepped forward and handed me a small, official-looking envelope.

“Mom,” I said, looking back down at my ex-wife. “When Maya uncovered Daniel’s fraudulent asset transfers, she also found something else. Because Daniel registered those properties under your name without your knowledge of the criminal charges, our legal team managed to legally sever your liability. You aren't going to prison with him.”

Chloe blinked rapidly through her tears, sniffing desperately. “Really? I... I’m not going to jail?”

“No,” I replied, handing her the envelope. “Inside this envelope is a one-way bus ticket back to your hometown, and enough savings to rent a small apartment for three months. It’s a clean slate. It’s the exact same starting point I had fifteen years ago when you left me with nine-month-old Jessi.”

Chloe stared at the envelope, shaking violently as the full weight of her choices finally crushed her soul. She realized then that her wealth was gone, her high-society friends had vanished, and the only people who had ever truly loved her were the ones she had heartlessly abandoned.
